There`s a vidio of him on this forum somewhere !! I wouldn`t do it though,..the vinyl washers make the pedal stiff and that puts the movement on the rim instead of the pedal. My speed king has a loose pedal and don`t move on the rim !! They have a solid bottom connection but not the footbopard for a reason.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

awesome looking kit! I have a spray painted 22 13 16 60's Ludwig kit I found for first cheap and I want to turn it into a green sparkle kit. Curious though, where did you get this "souped up" speed king pedal from? I googled that guys name and nothing turned up! thanks

Hi all,

I'm making some progress on this project, so I thought I'd share an update.

I came across an early '64 Super Classic kit on eBay that was in need of some serious work. The bass had an extra hole drilled in it to take an after-market center tom rack. It was also missing a hoop and several of the claws and lugs. The floor tom and rack tom are more complete, but all are in need of rewrapping as the WMP skins are in tough shape.

On the plus side, this is a matching kit (although the badge is missing from the floor tom) and I don't feel bad about rewrapping it in BOP since the original finish is trashed. When they come, I'm going to strip all the hardware and then send them off to Jack Lawton to be repaired/wrapped. (While the shells are out, I'll probably have a good portion of the hardware rechromed.)

BTW, I'm guessing this kit is an April or May '64 issue. With that in mind, my goal is to replicate Ringo's first Super Classic set.

On a fluke, I purchased a pre-serial number BDP Jazz fest. It's in really great shape, so that shell will not be getting rewrapped. Instead, my game plan is to either keep an eye out for another shell that can be rewrapped, or have a concert tom cut down and then use the hardware from the BDP snare on the replacement shell. The pending question for me is whether the correct height is 5" or 5.5". (I did a separate post seeking input on that question, but if you have any thoughts, let me know.)

I've made some advances on the hardware front as well. I have two original early '60s cymbal stands and a W&A 1304 bass anchor coming. I've got a portion of the Rogers mount parts that I need and am watching eBay for the rest. I'm looking into an early '60s Speed King and am also keeping an eye out for an 1123 hi-hat and a Buck Rogers 1358 snare stand.

After that, the next items will be replacement or original drum heads and cymbals.

As soon as the parts arrive, I'll try to take a bunch of photos before/after the restoration process.

All in all, this has been a really interesting learning experience and my wife is anxiously awaiting the chance to actually play the kit.

I'd like to thank all who have offered their advice and experience. By all means, please keep it coming.

Johnny, where are you having the parts rechromed? Do they do "mail in"?

thanks,

Thanks for your note.

There's a local chrome shop here in Bryan, Texas that does small stuff. I'm going to try him first. If he can't handle the job, then I've used a shop down in Houston for car parts and will probably run the parts down there to get an estimate. Once I get the job done, I'll let you know how it worked out and then give you the contact info of the place I used.

Hi all,

I've made pretty good progress the acquisition part of this project, so I figured I'd share some images of where things currently stand.

The only thing that I need to still get is an early Rogers tom mount arm. At some point I also need to figure out what's up with the two odd hoops I have on the toms, but that can hold for now.

If all goes well, I'm hoping to send the shells out in the next week or so to be repaired and rewrapped.

While they are being worked on my goal is to secure early '60s Zildjian thin 14" hi-hats, a medium-thin 18" crash and a medium 20" ride. I'll also be looking into new heads as well.

When the shells get back, I'll post more shots.

Thanks to all who provided advice/encouragement along the way.

Hey Uoscar,

Do you think you'd be interested in selling whatever WMP bass drum hoop inlay you can salvage? I'm missing the bottom 1/3 of WMP inlay on my '63 Super Classic. Let me know and I'll shoot you a message. Can't wait to see the finished product!

EMD, I'd be happy to see the strip go to good use. Shoot me a PM with your mailing address. If the weather's decent, my plan is to strip the hoops this weekend in preparation for repainting. I'll try to carefully remove the inset for you.

John...there seem to be some debate as to the actual shell depth of ringo's jazzfest .Though technically the catalog lists the jazzfest as 5x14 some 5 1/2 x 14 drums have turned up.Ringo's is one of them.If you look at photos of his snare, the lugs are "off set" as in they are not centered on the shell.A worker probably grabbed a classic model shell and drilled it without centering the multi-drill.So either way 5 or 5 1/2 is ok but some jazzfest guys i know swear by the 5 1/2 drums.Mine is a 5 x14 and sounds great, but if you want the true Ringo vibe..5 1/2 is the way to go.If you look at still photo's of Ringo's drums from 'Help" you can actually see his snare is 5/12 deep.
