advice on heads for Beverly 26x12 bass drum Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hi Guys,

I'm into an experiment. I've created a drum kit from Beverly marching drums. I converted a 14x10 inch snare into a tom by removing the snare bed en recutting the upper and lower bearing edges. I'v concerted a 16x12 tenor tom into a floor tom, I've put spurs on a 26x12 bassdrum.

The toms have coated ambassadors top and bottom and sound absolutely great, very warm, a lot of tone. The bassdrum has a pretty thick single ply head "Ludwig ensemble heavy coated" batter side and a Premier Everplay single ply reso-side. The premier head I coated myself with white oil paint. I've experemented with muffling and tuning but the drum keeps sounding like a tin can a bit and has a different character than the toms.

Anybody any advice? I'm thinking of buying a coated emperor for batter side and use the ludwig head for reso. Would that make it a bit thicker? Or a coated powerstroke 3? Anyone any experience with playing these shallow shells? (Probably birch, 3 ply with beech re-rings)?

Thanx in advance.

I can't speak for the 12" depth. But on my 14x26 I had a coated emperor batter with two strips of felt and a flam patch. On the reso an ambassador or fiberskyn with one strip. Nothing inside. No port. Worked great. Also a clamp-on muffler on the reso side was really nice.

Thanx,

Did you try two ambassadors? Do you have any clue on what an emperor might dorelative to an ambassador?

Heads this size are so damn expensive, I want to inform myself the best I can. Right now I'm considering a REMO PS3 coated, an Evans EQ4 coated or an emperor coated.

Regards, Bart

I didn't try 2 ambassadors (like you say it gets pricey).

Emperor is a 2 ply rather than the Ambassadors 1ply. The difference should be less sustain and a little darker, more punch. But there are a lot of factors (tuning, muffling, the other head, etc). The other big factor is how you play it. I noticed an exponential difference between heel-up buried beater hits and striking heel-down with recoil.

I have an Ambassador weight Fiberskyn that was my reso in like-new condition if you're interested in a trade or buying it off me send me a PM. I sold my 26 drum but without that head. I liked it much better than a regular A.

I'm in the Netherlands, so shipping costs would be way to high, otherwise I'd like to buy it from you. Thanx.

Good news is that I sold a kit I restored, so now there's some money. I'll take a shot on a PS3. I have a PS 3 on mij 24 Big R bass-drum and that works very well.

Cool. I think a PS3 is a great idea to try. I really like it on my WFL 22 batter. Let us know how it sounds!

What are you using as a resonant head? Thanks, Jerry.

Right now on the 22 WFL the resonant head is an ebony ambassador with a hole.

By the way, I have good results with using oil paint on left-over clear ambassadors. I use these as reso heads. Oil paint stays slighty flexible and sticks like crazy on the plastic if you sand it first with, say, grain 220. I apply it with a brush and than tap on it with a sponge or piece of foam untill it has an overal textured look. Makes the sound warmer and darker. Cool thing is you can use colour, or you can use off-white, or you can immitate natural skin. I'll show pics when finished, may take a while.

Best Regards, Bart

Dear Carter,

Finally got my PS3 sended. I put it on the bass-drum, but it didn't fit very well. That is to say: I had to tune it quite high to get the wrinkles out. Too high to my taste. So I adjusted the bearing edge. Now it sounds absolutely great!!!
