I'm now rotating these kits. They are all 12-13-16-22. Now that I've somewhat figured out my first camera, here are some photos:
1) 1978? Blackrome: Acquired May 2010. 6.5 matching snare acquired separately a few months later. Looks good in the photo, although there are issues up close, particularly on the back of the floor tom. This originally came with a 24" bass, but I acquired another kit for its 22" and Super Set-O-Matic holder and flipped the rest.
2) 1973 Phantom: Acquired June 2012. More description and additional photos on the thread "Phantom Sling." Using a Vistalite snare until I sell that set.
3) 1971 Walnut (black/gold badges): Acquired June 2012. Wasn't planning on this so soon after buying a Vistalite AND a Phantom, but these showed up on craigslist for $400. The seller was the second owner and hated to give them up, but she was moving to a place where she wouldn't have room for them. The number of replies gave her a better indication of what she had, but I eventually convinced her they would be going to a good home and we agreed on $500. It came with a rusty eight-lug Zoomatic; I'll be using a 10-lug COB TDR with it that will also go with the Phantoms when I sell the Vistalites.
Steve Schmit of Riverside, California, refurbished the Phantom and walnut kits. For the Phantom, he polished the chrome, cleaned the rust, painted the hoops, and did some bearing edge work on the toms. He did similar chrome, rust, and edge work on the walnut, along with a phenomenal refinishing job (it's unrecognizable from what I purchased). As with any 40-year-old drum, there were a few scratches and mars here (and on the other two kits), but they are not discernible from audience distance.
I use the same cymbal setup and S-O-M holder on all three kits. That holder gives me much better tom placement, but unfortunately hides the badges and puts the 13" tom seam up front on the Phantom and walnut kits (only the geekiest of geeks would notice).
