As always, necessity is the mother of invention. Thus we proudly unveil the new Ringotronics Swoosh Snare 3000. While possibly not providing much of a backbeat is does provide a backboard and yes, it does add new meaning to the term "3 point strainer".

Seriously, I walked into a venue tonight to pick up some of my gear from a show and apparently the last artist of the night was a s i n g e r / song writer who played acoustic guitar, kick with his right foot and snare with his left. (see attached photos) The snare is a WFL 6 lugger and it is suspended in a basketball goal by the basketball net. Genius! The guy attached a wire brush to the foot pedal. The WFL snare, while in need of a good cleaning was actually in pretty great shape.

The kick drum apparently belongs in the non USA section as it is clearly an MIJ of some sort. "Gambler Import Corp." is what it says on the badge. I am not familiar with those, but am no expert either. He didn't have spurs for it. (By the way, what the heck happens to all of those spurs? They are almost as likely to be missing as a bottom hoop and tension rods on a tom or the front hoop and T rods on a kick drum. I think people have just misunderstood the term "disappearing " spurs. But I digress.) Since he did not have spurs he opted to put the kick drum on a piece of plywood and then wire it to the tension rods. Why not? The T rods are actually pretty cool with the "T" being somewhat of an asymmetrical tear-drop shape.

From what I understand the guy was quite talented and he was very nice. Young kid actually. I asked him about the drums and he didn't really know anything other than a friend loaned them to him. He told me the kick drum was a Rogers. Of all the things it might be, that is really not one of them. It was not Ludwig either but it was nice vintage logo head.

I thought you guys would enjoy.

The snare drum set-up -is- pure genius! There are some really bright, creative people out there. It's always fun and eye-opening when you run into one as inventive as this guy obviously is.

'Necessity is the Mother of Invention!'

Cool story...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

A few years ago, I was out with the Mrs for a b-day drink with one of her coworkers. Anyway, the bar had an acoustic guitar player that night, only he sat and had 2 Roland kick pads connected to a module. He played kick with his right and snare with his left all night.

An old bass player of mine has done some solo nights putting a drum pad down connected to a Yamaha module, using bass drum, tambourine, etc sounds and tapping them out with his foot...

Scott,

Enjoy I did, especially the commentary on 'disappearing' spurs!

Yes, this is at the very least a very interesting and innovative set up! I may have to come up with a "copy" to market, huh? Or did you already advise him to get a patent on it? :)

I too liked your commentary on the spurs and have often wonderd where did they go?

Great story, it would be fun to see this guy perform.

Bill,

Good morning sir. I did not me ruin that he should consider a patent on this idea. It would be worth the price of admission to simply see the technical drawing of a basketball hoop, a net and snare!

Actually, isn't there already some piece if hardware that does this? Seems like I have seen something similar (sans the sporting equipment) with someone like Terry Bozzio or Kenwood Denard possibly.

As to guys being multi instrumentalists, my freshman year of college I studied with a marvelous gentleman by the name of Don Schroeder in St. Louis. Not only was he a great drummer, but I would watch him sit at a kit and play a samba with his feet and play a flute solo over the top of it. I also recall him playing "Feels so Good" (Chuck Mangione) on drums with his feet and right hand while playing the melody with a valve trombone in his left. No special rigging required in his set-up but geez.

That's funny because I thought exactly the same thing. "Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

Red Green... is that still on?

My boys and I always thought that show was hilarious! Somehow, however, my wife & daughter didn't see it the same way!
