Another BDP Rogers Luxor Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I just picked up my first Rogers drum tonight, a 1966ish BDP Luxor. It is 100% original. Wrap, Rogers heads (snare head has a hole), 16 strand Rogers snare wires, snare cord, tension rods, snare-butt, Bantam strainer and hoops are all original. It spent most of its life in a snare case until around 2007. There is no pitting on the chrome, just years of grime. I don't think the heads have even been off the drum. Serial Number 10,000. How cool is that? It also came with an Olympic flat-based snare stand.

This drum will clean up nicely. Here are some before pictures. I'll post some after pictures when I'm finished.

Great find!

I have learned that when they have some or all original heads on a drum, they usually clean up like new!

Also, have heard that a Rogers 6 lug sounds close to a Rogers 8 lug.....

Lastly,Rogers SURE liked BDP! ...Classy company/classy drum finish!

I see so much of it...........lucky for us Rogers BDP "freeks"!flowerflowers2

I have one in white pearl and I think it is THE big band sound for a snare drum...

Mine is a bit earlier with the taller hoops and B&B lugs but the shell looks the same to me.

You are going to love it if you like the Gene Krupa / Louis Bellson sound on all those old records.

Thanks, guys. Any suggestions for heads? The resonant head has a hole, but the batter looks like it still has some life left in it. I might just lightly clean that head and box it up. I usually use Hazy 300 for the resonant, but is there a vintage style?

Since the six lugger drums have a low to medium tuning range with the steel hoops, has anyone ever tried some cast hoops on a Luxor? If so, how'd it sound? Since it doesn't have a tone control, what do you guys use to keep the overtones down?

Has anyone tried to figure out the handwritten numbers/letters on Rogers paper tags? Mine has some numbers.

If there are handwritten numbers on the tag, that was done by an owner somewhere along the way. If there are letters written in the margin of the tag, that is usually the initials of the builder who finished the drum.

The shell on that drum is the same used on the Powertone, Tower and Dynasonic (without the paint).

I find the tone of the Luxor to be very similar to the 8-lug models, but trying to push it to a very high tension will start to bend the hoops. At normal tunings, it's fine. I've never tried one with cast hoops.

There are plenty of Luxors out there with a tone control: it was an option for a few dollars more. A few pieces of moongel will suffice without a tc.

Thanks DanC. Your collection is outstanding. If this is just your Luxor's, I can't imagine what else you have stacked, on display and setup. Mind Blowi

What heads do you like? The original Rogers head is in very good condition, so I might keep it on the drum.

This is a one owner drum and I am guessing the heads have never been removed. If I turn the tag upside down it looks like the hand written number is "12 65". Does this correspond with it having the "S/N 10000"? It might be an "R 65".

If it is "12 65", then maybe this could help with the serial number timeline.
