another swivomatic question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I have three swivo plates and two arms.

PROBLEM:

Neither of the two arms fully descend into any of the three plates that I want to mount into the bass drum.

They go in a little bit and then stop. I could mount them, but I like a low tom. Shouldnt they be able to go in flush with the end of the arm touching the bass drum mount?

Also, I could pound them in with a hammer, but I am sure this isnt what Rogers had in mind, nor normal.

**This is the rub, they move very smoothly as tom mounts. In this location, I can move them back and forth with plenty of adjustment room, and they will sit flush.

I thought that all the mounts were interchangeable as tom or bass drum mount. Is this, in fact, not the case? Does the Rogers tom arm have a slight diameter change for the tom arm vs. the bass drum mounting arm. I am very confused.

I am attaching several photo links that show three collets, all with the same problem with the swivo mount. Note how the tom arm will not fully descend into any of the end that would fit on the bass drum but WILL fit on the part that attaches to the tom.

Notice that there is about an inch of tom arm that wont go down. It fact, it seems to only have one position.

All of these say "made in usa" on the screw piece and "Rogers" on the collet. Perhaps I have a UK tom arm and American collets??!?!

In examining an ebay photo it seems that the inside diameter of my collet plates look smaller than others. Perhaps, I have two bass drum leg mounts and a cymbal mount. They just dont plain fit. I ordered the bigger looking one off ebay.

A responder on another board said sizes USA vs UK are different and that swivo tom mounts need to be bought in sets???

The early collet plates and hex rods were a tiny bit smaller. The later hex rods usually will not fit into the earlier collet plates. From the pictures I can tell you that tom arm is from the late 60's/early 70's, and the collet plates appear to be earlier.

What vintage drums are these: serials on the tags? Also, a photo of the drums would help. Is it a Londoner twin-tom setup on the bass or the earlier TopHat twin-tom rig? Or, is it a single tom on the bass?

Ok then, if you've been buying the parts separately that is likely the source of the problem. As I said, the vintage can sometimes make a difference.

Also, the tom arm you have is the short version for a twin-tom setup. Single-tom setups use a much longer arm.

big dan,

I wonder if that solves the whole issue.

Could it be that the double tom swivo-short

arms dont fit in the collet bases meant for the long arms?

Does anyone have both who could check?

Thanks for your help.

The short arms are the same as the long arms: same hex stock. The later arms sometimes will not fit the earlier plates, regardless of long or short....

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Swivomatic Zone. Try this link
