Another Zickos Supersonic has Surfaced. Some questions now... Last viewed: 42 minutes ago

I picked up this Zickos Supersonic kit on Craigslist today. They had been sitting in storage for years in Bellingham, WA. I paid $350. How many known Supersonics does this make now on the forums? 5? 6?

It's the usual sizes, 10/13, 12/15, 14/18 and 16/22 kick. Bare fiberglass shells. It was originally white but had been home painted with some awful flames and flowers, and even a love note by some previous owner.

All complete and original with the exception of the tom arms (anyone got any of those?) The bearing edges are interesting, they're basically completely flat! As in, no bearing edge cut at all. The heads were garbage, and I'm interested to hear how they sound with decent heads. But if they were a common wood kit I'd route the edges immediately.

Looks like someone moved the spurs at some point to get the toms into a better position, as there are extra bracket holes in two places. I stripped some paint away, which came off easily enough, and the shells are irreparably stained underneath unfortunately.

So, VDF, I want your opinions: should I paint these? They'll look awful if I don't. I've never done the auto body paint thing with drums but these might be a good candidate.

Should I cut bearing edges? I'm leaning toward no on that matter.

And, should I patch the extra holes? They were done decently, lined up well, not too ugly or over-wide. I could probably just put carriage bolts in them to plug them, which I sometimes like the look of. If I were to plug them, how? I've never worked with fiberglass before.

Thanks! I'll post process pictures of anything I end up doing and show everyone what it looks like when I'm done with it.

Paint and carriage bolts should work to make a nice looking set of drums. I have no idea about bearing edges. If Mr. Zickos thought that the edges should be the way they are, maybe he was right?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Yeah, I agree about the edges, no sense in making such a significant change to a rare kit. It's probably a dicey move putting a fiberglass shell on a router table anyway.

My friend has a kit and had a local body shop smooth out the shells and spray a nice avocado metallic paint... they were originally white and a little beat up (as I believe they all were) I heard there were only a few made, but more and more seem to show up on the web, so who knows. A lot of them were repainted, which I think is fine... they are pretty ugly looking when plain white.

I almost bought your kit a while back and was going to do go the automotive shop route... they did a pro job.

I'm thinkin' turquoise or pink. Like, Tama Granstar turquoise, one of the few solid colors I've always really liked.

Cool man, sounds like you are going to restore them.

I would. They are so "Jetson's."

Patch those holes with fiberglass resin and cloth shredded up and maybe a little acrylic paint tint to match interior shell wall color.

Paint the exterior.

I like that green.

I'll try to make a video of me playing the kit once the restore is done. That might a long time from now, however, I've got some other kits in line in front of this one.
