I picked up this Zickos Supersonic kit on Craigslist today. They had been sitting in storage for years in Bellingham, WA. I paid $350. How many known Supersonics does this make now on the forums? 5? 6?
It's the usual sizes, 10/13, 12/15, 14/18 and 16/22 kick. Bare fiberglass shells. It was originally white but had been home painted with some awful flames and flowers, and even a love note by some previous owner.
All complete and original with the exception of the tom arms (anyone got any of those?) The bearing edges are interesting, they're basically completely flat! As in, no bearing edge cut at all. The heads were garbage, and I'm interested to hear how they sound with decent heads. But if they were a common wood kit I'd route the edges immediately.
Looks like someone moved the spurs at some point to get the toms into a better position, as there are extra bracket holes in two places. I stripped some paint away, which came off easily enough, and the shells are irreparably stained underneath unfortunately.
So, VDF, I want your opinions: should I paint these? They'll look awful if I don't. I've never done the auto body paint thing with drums but these might be a good candidate.
Should I cut bearing edges? I'm leaning toward no on that matter.
And, should I patch the extra holes? They were done decently, lined up well, not too ugly or over-wide. I could probably just put carriage bolts in them to plug them, which I sometimes like the look of. If I were to plug them, how? I've never worked with fiberglass before.
Thanks! I'll post process pictures of anything I end up doing and show everyone what it looks like when I'm done with it.
