Any experience with cocktail drum pedals? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I'm thinking about getting the DW one....but it's very expensive. However, I am willing to pay for a quality product and I've always had good experience with DW pedals.

But, if anyone has any other good advice/recommendations for this type of pedal, then I am all ears!

Thanks

Well...there are a few I've used that were reversible.....the Ludwig SpeedMaster, an old Camco (real camco not the tama version) and there was one or two that I "converted" for use as a cocktail drum pedal. No need to buy any specialized pedal really. You can probably pick up a used DW 5000 single pedal somewhere for cheap and you can convert it for cocktail use yourself. Its not that difficult to do. If you go for a used 5000, do yourself a favor and buy two new parts for it: a new footboard hinge and a new spring. Both are usually wiped out. After that, some minor disassembly and reassembly is required to swap the sprocket around the other direction and then just swap the beater the other way around so it beats upward. Boom! One cocktail drum pedal.

Check this page out for the basic idea....http://www.cocktaildrum.com/learn/construct/dw-pedal/dw-pedal.html

Actually the whole site is pretty cool too....http://www.cocktaildrum.com/

Thanks, L-D. That is a cool site.

The problem I see with that conversion is that the pedal board is quite a bit more elevated. But, I might try it with an old 5000 and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Hey there,

I think the DW cocktail kit is one of the most over-priced pieces of musical equipment out there.

I play a cocktail kit- live, relatively often, that I put together myself. With proper mic ing it sounds great, is easy to carry and gives me the proper response to do what I need to do.

I experimented a lot with different set ups. I too use a vintage Ludwig universal SpeedMaster pedal- it is the best I have tried so far - and cheap. I have two SpeedMasters- one to play and one for parts- I got them both for 30$ each. Here are pics of my set up. Bass drum is 14x14 Pearl Vision Birch, snare is a 12x4 Yamaha Stage Custom. The small tom is a Pearl Rhythm pod 10x2

Maybe I'll look into a SpeedMaster. Where does one buy the mounting bracket to mount it to a floor tom leg? -a la the one in Osaka Bop's pic. Thanks

Yamaha sells one in its spare parts catalog for the Steve Jordan cocktail kit.

I got my bracket separately on auction- it's a Yamaha - same as on the Jordan.

Any drum shop should be able to get one from Yamaha I bet. For the 14x14 tom/bass- I put an adjustable snare rake inside the top so it can function as a one-drum-drumset. Bottom is a bass and top is a snare- I recorded a solo - just foolin around but here is a link if you wanna hear this kit - there is no separate snare on the recording just the 14x14 played top and bottom simultaneously with also a hihat and a Istanbul Agop 20" Trash Hit (crash/ride)- I threw a few background thunder sound and a few effects into the mix for fun but no other drums or dub overs- just played straight through no planning- I was just testing the thing out the day I got it and recorded it.
