Anyone able to identify/confirm this Ludwig? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Im looking to buy this Ludwi. I havent seen it in person as I have been working roughly 100 hours a week for the past 6 months but I made time to be able to go check it out. The owner says it is 1926. It looks correct to what I have seen. WHat else should I be looking for to confirm. They are asking $800 and I feel as if I may have a steal here.

Far from 1926!

Yeah I figured that by the strainer. Just trying to figure out what this is and if its worth the time to check out. Thanks.

The shell actually has the 1926 engraveing style with the filled in tips and the Ludwig Chicago is in the correct spot. I can see the extra holes from the old strainer, but has new hoops and throw. I can`t say about the ludwig gold lugs, but maybe Mike C will come upon this thread !!

if you look closely at the pic, you can see an empty hole behind that p85. that would make sense as the p338 strainer is much shorter than the p85 holes.

I have a couple of concerns about the drum. 1. The hoops and the throw oww have obviously been changed and an extra hole added for the newer throw off which has been pointed out. 2. The engraving looks good, almost too good for a drum that age unless it was stored and cared for to an exceptional degree which seems a little unlikely since the original hoops, hooks, tension rods and throw off are all gone. 3. The shell looks very dark in the picture (it is grainy so I appologize if I am just seeing this wrong) and also very smooth and combined with the sharpness of the engraving makes me wonder if the drum has been "restored" by someone and the finish redone. I happen to have a Black Beauty with the same engraving pattern and am posting pictures here for comparison. My drum is three generations old and gets played out on a regular basis. My hoops are not original but the throw off is. I made sure to get the throw off and Ludwig engraving in the picture for comparison. Also, OddBall is correct and this drum would have no badge due to its age. The 12 point floral patern was offered in slight variations from 1926-1931 and my understanding is that this particular floral pattern (same as mine) was offered around 1928 (If anyone can verify this better please feel free to step in here) and this would be Ludwig Deluxe since they did not start using the name Black Beauty until 1932 which I believe is also when they smitched to the 10 leaf floral pattern. Hope this helps.

What is the asking price for the drum. If the price is right and the drum sounds good it could be fun trying to track down original parts. :2Cents:
