That is catchy!

Hey TommyP! Can we at least establish some ground rules for this mass insurgence of sale ads? How about prices and pics are mandatory? This would at least put a price and pic with the item for future generations to see what the heck these tubs were going for and in some small way contribute to the historical documentation. The way most ads are now, it is best offer, privately of course, and we learn very little about the market over different periods of time.

I think the idea of a specific category for members to post "finds" from CL and eBay is a good idea... but it won't solve the "problem" completely (in quotes because I still don't see it as one). How many times have you seen someone post in the wrong category just on simple questions? I've seen this a lot, particularly with new members many of which have something that they've found or inherited or something and they join just to ask a few questions. Then we don't see them after a while...

Tommyp, for what it's worth I think you do a good job... but adding a few "part-time" moderators might be of some help. Maybe even help with taking some of the posts in the wrong categories and putting them in the right ones.

(Just thinking out-loud: This is not an offer to volunteer!) :)

And Dan, I like your idea of madatory pics and prices on "for sale" items. That would help to keep people from trying to pit members against each other in an auction type of thing. But how would it be policed or monitered? Would that be just something more for the moderator, or could it be built in to the posting process?

I had a CL add turn up here on the forum, with a member asking opinions on it. Of course I replied it was a great kit & he should come over and pick it up!

Got a kick outta that.

... and a few responses are in order!, so...

I have mentioned a "specific catagory" for eBay/craigslist, ie: CraigBay.. ( yes, that is indeed catchy! ) .. to David in the past. He has never really wanted ANY of that stuff on the forum at all, but as time has marched on, well... they are both quite ubiquitous today, and that we all agree on. So it just may be time for something like this. I/we shall keep you/the membership, posted... which leads nicely here:

Dan/DH mentioned pics and prices... AGREED!, as yes, now it would have value historically and would be of use as a reference. Again though, this is all in the talking stages, and David may not even be interested. Let's see where this goes!

billnvick!: You know, I have been here with David since the forum started.. ( 7 years now I believe ) .. and was flattered when he asked if I would be the "Super Moderator". Truthfully, I have never really known what the "Super" was there for, but it is there nontheless! Interestingly, more goes on BEHIND the day to day then you might know.. actually, I take that back, as I'm sure you do know! Anyway... I already "move misplaced posts", and pretty much daily at that. Some I let remain even if they might be in the "wrong catagory" as they might have really cranked up with a lot of looks/response, and why make the general membership hunt for the thread. A LOT of them are constantly moved though... probably more than you even knew! That said, David has always maintained that he wanted to keep the Administrator/Moderator positions as small as possible.. ( meaning how many people ) .. as there is more control that way. The VDF is rarely out of control.. ( although from time to time there are some beauties! ) .. thus he wants to keep it the way it is. That may change though, as so many things do over time. If/when it does, we will contact and/or put the word out that we are looking for a few members to help with the "general day to day" running of the forum, and more that than another actual Moderator. I THANK YOU for mentioning that you think I do a good job by the way. I appreciate it!

The point I`d like to make is that, in time, the ebay and craiglist links will expire resulting in "dead ends" for any future reference...The only way around this would be to copy and paste the pics and the info in the ad or listing to the thread itself...This would ensure that in time to come, all aspects of the ad or listing are still there...This may also help with future "How Much Should I Ask" threads as well...

Only my 2 cents...

Cheers

This is a good point Grantro! In fact, it is the exact same point David, the Webmaster made, when he got rid of the EBAY section all together, on this forum. He said that they all ended up dead links and were worthless after awhile.

grantro/DH!...

You are BOTH... absolutely correct! That has always been David's concern... and it is a valid one. Still... there seems to be no way to stop the Juggernaut that is eBay/craigslist. It is being pondered.

If people put them in the right category, that`s where we would go to look,..but they don`t, and it get`s outta hand because nobody`s sure anymore !!

This was my point.....they are randomly and haphazardly posted all over the forum. And after a while it gets a little annoying, especially if you are not in the market for anything right now.

Hmmmmmmm... you know, there is such an abundance of eBay/craigslist posts and links that they just might need their own catagory. Good points on this!... perhaps with a DEDICATED place to post those, it will be easier for everyone to find... not to mention a tad neater on the oveall site. Let me see what I can do!Tommyp
