Anyone heard of flipping a hoop? Last viewed: 5 hours ago

I saw this post on another forum about a guy who wanted to do what I'm trying to do with converting a floor tom to a bass and all he did was simply remove the hoop, flip it and use longer tension rods and wa la, it was done, by inverting the hoop you have plenty of room to mount the pedal. (wider lip) what do you think? then all you need is spurs for front support

I think that you would be hard pressed to get a good bite on the hoop with the pedal and it would be really hard on the hoop. Replacing a vintage 20" stick saver might prove problematic. For 60-70 bucks you could buy a Gibralter hoop with a great lacquered finish. For quite a bit less you could buy an unfinished Keller hoop, spend a few hours and finish it yourself.

Check out the Dixson Bass Drum Lift. www.bassdrumlift.com Looks like it would work regardless of what type of hoop you use.

You may be right about damaging the hoop, however, regarding new hoops, I took off the top hoop and measured from the top of the lug to the top of the shell is 1.5" the floor tom lugs are MUCH closer to the top of the shell, compared to how the lugs are on a bass drum, this bass drum lift looks like it could be the ticket. all I'd have to do is figure out a way to support the front of the bass drum.

hmm, I just looked closer at the web site says for use on 16 and 18" floor tom or bass drums only

Actually, it occurs to me that I have an old 60's Slingerland 20" hoop that you are welcome to try. It is most likely BDP but appears to have been spray painted black. Let me know.

Much more affordable to buy the hoop from HBDrums. They may be birch, but they also offer them lacquered too.

Seems their account has been suspended?????

Try this - perhaps we will get an answer here. https://www.facebook.com/pages/HB-Drums-Percussion/191015358632

Please - when anybody gets a response from them or learns anything about their fate - please report it back here for us all to know.

Thanks,

John
