I was sent this link by one of the guys in a band I play in. Never heard of Viola Smith, but she's got a great set up, and has a ball playing it! All-girl big band 1939. I can't place the kit, toms have tacked bottom heads, so could be Luddy or Slingy, I don't know. Mr Cooper? Mr Layton? Telephone call for you on line 6...

Plus the two high drums on either side of her - what are those? Never seen that before. She was right out there with her set up all right, but a great band!

Cool. I love the the curved cymbal arm, very art deco. And all the trash cymbals in front.

She is fantastic. Recently saw a documentary on PBS about women musicians during WWII. She was one of the features. She is still living and can still play even though she is around 100 years old.

I believe she was the drummer in Phil Spitalny's all "girl" band in the '40s

I think that of all the drum videos my friends post on my FB page (constantly, I may ad), that video of Viola (w/ the freaky cymbal stands) is my favourite. Well, that & a number with Eleanor Powell and Buddy Rich doing tap. The productions from those periods are just beyond belief!

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony
60's Ludwig Supersensitive
Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare
