Anyone know what these are? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Hi! Newbie here and only a hack drummer at best.... but I'm going to an auction next week and they're advertising a 1930's - 40's era drumset. They provided a few rough pictures, but no other info. Here's a link to the pics... I've used a real estate virtual tour service to show the pics, so ignore the mls stuff at the top.

Anyway... My main purpose for buying these would be to resell and I'm hoping to get an idea of what kind of drums they are (or might be) before I go to the auction (there's only a short preview available before the auction starts.) From my limited research on line and looking at tons of pics of old sets.... I think late 30's Ludwig. What do you think?

What should I look for? There seems to be a throne as well as cases, but I don't see a snare in the pics. Any info, advice or idea of value (actual able to sell for value... not book value, please) would be greatly appreciated! I sell most of my stuff through ebay.

Great site, by the way!

Looks like a 60's 22, 13, 15 Duco set. I would love to buy that set. If you get it for cheap and would like to double your money...I'm in.

Boy, it sure looks like that Club Date set! How much did you get for yours? I can see what looks like a snare stand in the pic, and maybe a high hat pedal, but I can't tell. I'm familiar with this auctioneer and he often doesn't realize what he has. I once bought $800 worth of camera equipment that he called "flash thingys" when he held up the bag they were in! Also, it's in a fairly rural area... likely not to many drum collectors there. I'm really hoping I can pick it up cheap....

If it is indeed a "Club Date Kit", how would I solidly identify it, and what price range (ballpark) might I realistically get out of it for a quick sale?

Thanks!

Are you a drummer? Do you understand how the cleaning and restoration of drums work, and what to do and not to do? A deep cleaning is tedious and timeconsuming, but well worth it. As for a "quick sale", what is your idea of a quick sale? Are you talking walk away, box it up and sell it? No real interest in doing it right? Then in it's current condition, and the fact it is a Duco set with considerable chipping evident, I would think no more than 3-400 in the current market and condition. Anyone else? I see OkieBobs' Combo in really good condition is still available.

As far as identifying the set as a ClubDate, it is the location of the lugs in the center of the shells. That is the way to tell. Bowties amidships. Good luck with the auction! Let us know how it goes.

Definitely a WFL or Ludwig Club Date set. I'm guessing a little older than some of the others have, probably mid 1950s, based on the 12" X 15" floor tom (which was changed to a 14" X 14" sometime around 1962), and what looks like a hoop mount, bent-arm cymbal holder in your photos. It looks like a perfect match with the Club Date kit in this 1955 catalog .

Being a relative newbie myself, I'm not much of an expert on valuations. But that kit is pretty rough - rusty hardware, not well stored, paint really badly checked - so I wouldn't pay more than a couple of hundred bucks, especially if you're not in love with them and only intend to sell them. That kit in excellent condition - which it isn't, and couldn't be made to be without a major rehab - would probably bring $400 or $500 in an eBay auction.

A quick eBay search turns up this kit - similar in many aspects to yours, but including the matching snare - that recently didn't get any bidders at $150.

scott, you may be a newbie, but you have a good eye.but the ludwigs came with a 12x15" tom also not just wfl's, until I have a better pic, I can't really say! also Mike you asked what I got for mine $1000.00 but it had a mint 5x14" jazz festival, 14x22".9x13",14x14" floor no paint loss and only some dings on the bass drum and floor tom with all the parts and practically new heads, it was turn key! a 4 piece duco kit with the sizes you are looking at and a pioneer snare drum just sold at the chicago drum show for $950.00 clubdates are going up in value finally, but this one your looking at will need a restro job, to bring any money the 12x15" is the money drum in your kit!

Hi, and thanks for all the great information! To answer a couple questions that were asked....

1) Yes, I am a drummer of sorts... the student sort. My son went to college and took his set with him.... so I picked up a cheap one to bang around on while I learn. It's an Astro and the hi-hats sound like they came straight off of a wind up mechanical monkey.

2) I'm not opposed to doing some basic restoration, but I clearly don't have the expertise to do it right. So "quick sale" will mean after basic cleaning only. Perhaps I could replace some of the rusty bits. If I got it cheap, and it sounded tons better than the Astro set, I might keep it, if it was usable without a large additional investment. I buy and sell anything of interest that turns up at yard sales and estate auctions (usally antiques).... and I really enjoy learing new things about old stuff.... This site rocks for that, by the way!

I'm hoping the drums are in better condition than the pictures indicate... not sure how much is dirt / dust and how much is damage.... also hoping that there's a snare around there somewhere.

Anyway.... what I'm coming up with is that IF they are in better condition than they appear, and IF there's a snare and WITH mild cleaning, they should bring $400 ish... maybe $500. BUT... if they are as rough as they appear, rusty hardware, missing the snare, etc., they will likely not bring over $150 - $250. Really, really rough and they won't top $150. Is that a good appraisal?

If that's acurate, it gives me an idea of what I would need to buy them for. I really think they might top out around $100, based on other auctions by the same auctioneer.... Here's hoping!

Thanks!
