If I got it cheap, and it sounded tons better than the Astro set, I might keep it, if it was usable without a large additional investment.

Ah ha...there's the rub, as they say. These drums will probably sound great without much work at all. Unless there's some structural problem (destroyed bearing edges, cracked shells, etc.) that isn't obvious in the photos, good heads and tuning may be all you need to create a great sounding vintage kit. It's only because of the cosmetic issues that they wouldn't be as valuable or desirable on the vintage drum market. But they'd probably make a helluva player's kit, especially if you like vintage jazz / blues / R&B sounds.

FWIW, your valuation estimates look about right to me.

if there is an 8 lug snare with them and if that cymbal that im assuming goes with the drums is a nice weight and vintage then thats 300 at least resale on those 2 pieces. id also pull the trigger for that much for whats in the picture alone if the shells and hardware were not abused.

Well... I'm at the auction.... miserable rainy day. Drums are ROUGH... no snare, cracked paint, rusty hardware. On the other hand, they will likely go very cheap... and the cymbals are zildgen... I'm just worried about how hard it will be to resell in their condition..... I'll be doing research for the next half hour or so if anyone has any thoughts....

I'll let you know how it goes....

They sold for $240 to a restorer.... oh well... at least they'll be treated well!

Thanks for all the info.... next time I see old drums at an auction I'll know where to turn!
