Are vintage hat stands really usable? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I just went all vintage and got a flat based Slingerland hi-hat that I bought on ebay. First I was SHOCKED how small the box was when it arrived. When I set it up it felt like kids toy compared to all the newer ones I've had, but it matched my other stands and the kit.

I did put a piece of a rubber hose on the shaft in order to lower the or pre-load the foot board and I did have to deploy the spike to keep it from sliding forward (cuz it's so light) but after a couple months, I love it. Smooth, light, fast and I even A/B'd modern stands and this one with 3 popular hat cymbals and ALL of them sounded better on this light weight vintage stand!

From Musicman

I had a sixties vintage Premier flat base hi-hat that was very sturdy and light.

I have one of those too,but haven't even used the thing with a band yet!Hmmmm

60s ones are fine, 50s less so and anything prior to that are a little bit of a chore. Spur locks are great I use one more than my DW6000 these days

I used a 60's Rogers swan-leg swivomatic hi-hat stand with a one piece foot board at a 3 set gig last night. Light, fast, responsive, never any problems......

I have all 3 Camco versions. Nice and lightweight. All three are smooth as silk, no problems and I've gigged with them many times.

My modern stand is a DW 6500 but I didn't like the footboard so it now has a Camco footboard!

Over the years I ended up if all of the different SPUR-LOK hi-hats.They are all nice to play(even with the weak spring) I would stay away from the Ringo model as it wobbles to much.My Trixon kit came with a flat base very smooth hi-hat. Key word in all is light weight and easy to haul around. My vote would be for a SPUR-LOK ....

I used a Slingerland 806 for a good many years until it broke (hinge at the top of the footboard). But it was never very fast, and the action was pretty heavy. I'd run across a Ludwig 1123-1 (plastic pull) and had just put it away; when I started playing it I was surprised at the lightness of the action. I've not found another hi-hat stand that has that same, almost weightless, feel. Now, it has its weaknesses: the original clutch eventually stripped out (used ones seem to go for a fortune!) and the center wing nut (mine aren't chromed like some I've seen) is delicate, meaning that I'd think you'd run the risk of stripping the assembly if you applied too much torque when clamping the upper and lower tubes together. As it is, my upper tube can drop an inch occasionally when I play hard, heel up. That's my only negative comment.

I just started using my Slingerland Dynamo hh stand and I love it. I use a DW 5000 3 leg for gigs which is good but has a broken mem lock so I have to really crank down on the collar so it doesn't drop while I'm playing and a base screw that fell out long ago. I also use a DW9000 2 leg that I only use at home because I HATE it. If I move it an inch over from where it is the thing rocks back n forth like crazy when I'm footing it. I shouldn't have to mess with it for 10 mins. every time I set it up somewhere. Also, the floating cam action gets really annoying when playing slower 8ths with the foot since the top cymbal floats up and down so much that when the cymbal is floating downward at the same time as the foot is coming down, there is no spring resistance making for a constantly inconsistent feel in in the pedal. It doesn't matter how tight or loose the spring is set. Oh, and the fancy pants cymbal tilter just disintegrated after a few months. Total $300 waste of money. With that said, I have to say that I'm very surprised at how nice the Dynamo feels. It's light, but very stable and stays glued to the carpet thanks to the optional spikes on all 3 legs. It takes more pressure to hold the cyms very tight compared to the DW9000 but I can handle that if the pedal feel is consistent and solid. I don't intend on gigging with it as I don't want to put it to the rigors of my hardware bag since it's original to my 71 Slings but, after using it at home with a very active HH foot, I have nothing but good things to say about the Dynamo. I may even get another to use on gigs. It would definitely lighten up the bag.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant on the DW 9000 2 leg. It's intended to be a rave about the simplicity and excellence of the Slingerland Dynamo. I would've never guessed these stands were so great based on the lightweight appearance.

I like my Ludwig late 50's model 1121 (WFL footboard)..........I never used one until I got it with my late 50's Gretsch kit....I love it....and I use the SpeedKing BD pedal (WFL Footboard) - came with the set as well). I hear the Rogers Swivomatic Swan Leg Hi-Hat is a good stand too but I've never played one. I'm not a heavy hitter.

I do love my Pearl 2000 hihat stand though.
