I was browsing their used inventory online (about the ONLY good thing with GC is their used gear and that you can browse the whole USA online) and found a Sonor Martini kit for $175 in their Ft. Lauderdale Store. There was no picture, so I talked to the drum guy and he said they were basically in like new condition. I pulled the trigger and had them sent to my home.
I'm sure you're all familiar with the Sonor Martini kit. 14" Bass Drum, 8" and 13" toms, and a 12" snare. Probably one of the smallest and most compact kits ever made. So what did Guitar Center do? They shipped the kit in FIVE different boxes. FIVE! One for each drum and one for the tom mount, floor tom legs and bass drum spurs/lifter. Are they crazy? That is one of these easiest kits to ship! See the picture below for a good laugh. That's what was on my porch when they arrived.
I'm sure they lost money, as they only charged me $35 to ship it to my door. Incidentally, if you choose to have it shipped to the store for pick-up, it's the same exact shipping price. Who's going to have it shipped to the store?
In my opinion, if you have shipped to the store, you shouldn't have to pay shipping, but that's just me. Clearly they have no regard for saving on shipping costs, so who knows.
