As if we needed any further proof that Guitar Center is run by idiots........... Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I was browsing their used inventory online (about the ONLY good thing with GC is their used gear and that you can browse the whole USA online) and found a Sonor Martini kit for $175 in their Ft. Lauderdale Store. There was no picture, so I talked to the drum guy and he said they were basically in like new condition. I pulled the trigger and had them sent to my home.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the Sonor Martini kit. 14" Bass Drum, 8" and 13" toms, and a 12" snare. Probably one of the smallest and most compact kits ever made. So what did Guitar Center do? They shipped the kit in FIVE different boxes. FIVE! One for each drum and one for the tom mount, floor tom legs and bass drum spurs/lifter. Are they crazy? That is one of these easiest kits to ship! See the picture below for a good laugh. That's what was on my porch when they arrived.

I'm sure they lost money, as they only charged me $35 to ship it to my door. Incidentally, if you choose to have it shipped to the store for pick-up, it's the same exact shipping price. Who's going to have it shipped to the store?

In my opinion, if you have shipped to the store, you shouldn't have to pay shipping, but that's just me. Clearly they have no regard for saving on shipping costs, so who knows.

Depending on it`s condition, you got about half new price. The BD is supposed to sit like a Howitzer.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Sure they lost money on shipping, but I prefer kits are shipped to me in separate boxes.

I think GC must have an overall deal with shipping concerns due to the vast quantities they ship in a given year. They've been doing it too long now to be stupid enough to be losing money. It's not quite the same thing a an individual having to pay $150 to ship a kit from Boston to LA.

My company ships everyday, and a huge quantity. When I was able to ship through them, it was around 45% compared to the UPS drop off center. Huge difference.

FWIW since the kit was used they didn't have the original boxes so they used whatever they had laying around. Give them credit for recycling old boxes. As to whether or not they lost money on the shipping, it doesn't matter since right now GC needs to show cash flow, and if shipping a ships-in two-boxes kit in five boxes is what they have to do sometimes to get it, then so be it. For an outfit like GC, operating costs take a backseat to cash flow.

And that may be the reason they are going under. Of the three in CT, one is very small, one I've never been too, and the one in Orange,CT is a joke now. Used to be an amazing store , now it has the very basic sh!t, not even anything great in the way of used gear. I remember when I looked forward to it being here, now...not so much.

I've never bought anything from GC that required shipping but I believe the advantage of having the item shipped to the store is you can inspect whatever it is at that store before you accept it. If it doesn't meet your approval you can just walk away from the deal. If it comes to your house you're going to have to load it up and take it to the store. More hassle to deal with so if you are ordering a questionable item it might make more sense to ship it to the store.
