I have listened to the songs several times. I have even practised the songs. But I know that there's going to be the oh-so-special way these cats will be playing them. Even if you're going for "just like the record", there are subtle nuances that each person adds and the group as a collective adds it's own subtle (or not so subtle) flavour to the way they play a given piece of music. We picked songs that could easily be learned with regular 2 and 4 beats.
What am I saying? No matter how well you prepare for an audition, you don't know exactly how you'll meld with the others. If the bass player and I can't get it right, the audition is doomed.
Why am I posting this here rather on my blog? 'cos I am certain my band mates don't visit this forum; they couldn't give a whit about vintage drums. If I get the job, I have decided to scale back my involvement in the current project, as I think it is just on a slow simmer at this point.
What drums am I playing tonight? Late '80s Japanese-made Tama Rockstars (12" and 14" power toms and a 22"x16" kick) and my NOS Gretsch frankenstein (NOS 5" deep 14" maple finished in silver sparkle nitron, OCDP lugs and wood hoops w/Trick strainer). Paiste pies abound with a 22" Stewart Copeland Blue Bell ride, 14" JJ Alpha hats, 16" Alpha colorsound medium crash and a 16" 2K2 prototype colorsound crash.
Thanks for indulging me for my blog-like moment.
