weird but it looks to me to be backwards plus the grommet any one see this before ?

Gary - I've seen a couple of those. If you look carefully you'll notice that when they drilled the vent hole the shell 'blew-out' in the back. Ludwig would take a second badge and add it to the back to reinforce the blow out. The other two drums I saw with internal badges were the same deal... covered up/reinforced blow out in back of the vent hole.

I have a WFL snare drum with about a half dozen badges on the inside. They're used a "spacers" for a thinner than normal shell.

In my drum, the shell is made of masonite, a very short lived WFL mid 50's experiment.

Here's mine in a 6.5x14 Symphonic from early 60's (pre serial badge)

To me it looks like they just tried to cover the possible crack then?

The drum has stood the test of time so far..
