If the issue is just light, isn't it possible to simply wrap the drums in any sufficiently thick fabric (old blanket)?

All six of my kits are stored in Protection Racket bags. Superb. I haven't had any sizing problems.

I use the regular Gator bags, also have the H&B Galaxy bag for my 24" bass drums. Couple of protection racket bags, bass and snare, those are nice. I just recently purchased a bag for my 10"x15" tom, a Roadrunner. Good price, nice bag, heavy duty. I also like the rubber glow in the dark size indicator on them, nice touch. They have those at Guitar Center.
I also have H&B Fibre Cases for all my drums, but if I am doing local gigs and personally handling my stuff, bags are fine.
A big 14"x24" Fibre case is not easy to haul around unless you have a truck or some type Van.
