Bass drum clamp-on spurs Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hi. I'm considering clamp-on spurs for my 24" Slingerland bass drum which currently has no spurs nor holes where any were previously fitted. I've seen the Danmar spurs on Ebay which are based on the original clamp design & look pretty robust. I've also seen some by DW which clamp the hoop the other way (across the longest dimension) and also seem to have the benefit of retractable pointed feet as well as the rubber bumpers. Have any of you had experience of either of these spur types and noted any issues or otherwise? Thanks.

...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

I have both the DW and the Danmar and the DW are better built. They're great

Thanks a lot for the input. Have you noticed whether the clamps on the DW spurs mark or damage the hoops at all?

I haven't noticed but they may. The DWs are padded too.

I use the DW spurs on my 26" slingerland. Rock solid, pretty easy to set up and pack down, two square head screws clamp each leg to the mount which stays on the drum. Typical DW hardware product in that the finish is fantastic and it's built incredibly well.

I have the DW spurs that i bought for an old 70's Yamaha gigging kit.. They're solid and look great, but.. the only annoying thing about them is that they have to be tightened with a drum key, which can be a real pain for tearing down and setting up. Unless you'll be set up in a rehearsal space or studio, then it's fine, but when you gig as often as i do, it's a inconvenient. That is a major flaw design on DW's part. You'd think they'd come up with a better, more efficient way to tighten the spurs, such as a T- wing screw.. I would go with the Ludwig Atlas spurs for the following reasons.

They look great, are inconspicuous, and all you have to do is remove a lug, not potentially scuffing and scratching your hoop with the Danmar, which i also owned, and found them to be pretty frail, and slipped quite often..The Atlas spurs would be the best choice.

Thanks, and the Atlas spurs look great but correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the shell need to be drilled to fit them?

You shouldn't have to drill for the Atlas spurs if you have a double lugs. One of the screws adjusts so that it can be used for different lug spacing. Will not for club-date style (center-lug) drums.

I second what Elmoonlightdrummer says. If it's a double lug bass drum, then you're good to go.. The beauty about the Atlas Spurs and tom mounts, are that they fit any and all lug screw spacing, with a very clever design that allows you to adjust the spacing by sliding the screw spacing "rail" to the exact size of your lug.. They also fit kick drums of 16-26" diameters with the adjustable rotating spur height adjustment..

I think these spurs are a no brainer.. Good luck and let us what choice you went with !

Cheers,

Rob

Mine is only a single lugger so not going to work. Probably have to go with the DW ones.
