Bass Drum Felt Muffler Strips Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Does anyone happen to know the WIDTH of the felt strips that seemed to be quite common on the interior shells of vintage bass drums from the 60s era?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

Heres what I do:

Go to a fabric store. Check out their felt selection.

Last week I went to this place here in Wisconsin (don't know if it is a national chain or not) called Joanne Fabrics.

I got 6 strips in various widths (wider for bigger drums and acording to how thick the head is etc.) for:

Drum roll.......................

$0.42

I am not sure about the "standard width". I would guess something like 2.5 inches or so. I got some ranging from 2.5 to almost 4 inches across.

The usually have various thicknesses of felt and you can pic colors too. Pretty sweet deal imo.

Hope that helps!

When I recently refurbished my Ludwig Super Classics, (14x22). I went to a fabric store and picked up a 36x36 sheet of heavy white felt. Cut a 4" wide strip and mounted it vertically halfway between the drum edge and center of the reso head. Doing away with the crumpled up newspapers I had put in there in 1974. It was fun reading the old advertisements though!

Looks good, and I like it much better!

Joanne Fabrics is a national chain. I did the same for the last felts I needed. I think these are three inches wide, white strips of felt. I bought a roll remnant for $0.79. I think I have enough for the rest of my life and maybe another drummer besides...

The strip that is in my 62 slingerland is a little under two inches, and that is the original strip.
