Bass Drum Painting Services? Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

Hi,

I have a 1924 Ludwig and Ludwig kit that I'm going to refurbish (not restore). Age has character. Mostly remove rust. The resonant head of the bass drum has a small hole in it that will eventually tear, as I intend to play this kit. So, I need a new resonant head sized approx. 26-7/8". Remo will make me a custom head. I need someone to paint it. I want the Jazz Pirates scene that some of you may know.

Any suggestions? I used the search engine here and found a company called DrumArt that does this sort of thing, but they won't use anything but their own heads, and they don't use Remo.

Thanks.

I needed a military crest painted on the front of a 16x16 rope snare. Asked the high school art teacher for the name of her best student artist. Had the kid copy the photo perfectly in acrylic for $50. Just a suggestion.

Steve, I earned my living as a graphic artist for 22 years. At $50.00 an hour for time, an artist is looking at 3 to 4 hours work. It's easy enough to reproduce, the artwork has an American classic tattoo look to it. But it'll cost around $150 to $200. to pay an artist to do it. That's an honest, sober estimate.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. John, it's funny you mentioned tattoos, as that was my solution. Took the old beat up head and a really good picture of the art to a tattoo artist down the street. They were excited about doing it, and said they could reproduce it exactly. $80. It's good that they were so cheap, 'cos the Remo custom heads are gonna cost $167 each. Yikes!

Thanks again all.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'll post pictures. They were very confident that they could reproduce it exactly. I'm trying to figure out a way to put a light in there like they did back in the day to really be authentic. There is a ringed piece of hardware on the kick, so that you could attach a strap and carry the bass drum. I may remove that and see if I can run a wire into it.

Cheers.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Hey guys,

I appreciate the continued input, but as you'll note in post #5, I found an incredible tattoo artist who will do it for $80. I took a head and an excellent copy of the art along just so they'd know exactly what they were dealing with, and they were quite keen to do it. They suggested tempera as the paint for it, since it will be vibrating. Now I'm focused on getting my new custom heads from Remo and finding a way to put a light inside the BD.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions and offers.
