Sorry for the seemingly (to you guys) simple questions but.....Are you supposed to have a pice of rubber to protect the bass drum hoop from the pedal clamp? I just bought my first kit and it seems like there should be something to keep the hoop from getting chewed up? It's a new Tama Iron Cobra going on a late 50's Slingerland Krupa if it matters? I am also wondering if I need one of the round sticker things to put on the batter side where the bass pedal beater contacts the head? Thanks guys!!

Question #1: a piece of rubber or cloth is not needed on the hoop, but is advisable to protect that beautiful old wooden hoop. A rubber patch above and below the hoop is good insurance
Question #2: An impact pad is also a a good idea. I have always used and preferred a moleskin patch that can be found in any drugstore or most supermarkets.
To combine the two answers (or to get two things out of one...), I also cut a piece of the moleskin and attach it to my bass drum hoop where the pedal goes (top side only). It really gives quite a lot of bite, pedal clamp to hoop, and it's easy to take off if you need to without doing any damage to the hoop.
If you look around, you will find a company that sells a rubber piece that sticks to the bottom of your batter BD hoop. Then, you put the pedal on,no marks.
Maybe it's Slugg or Danmar or.....Gibralter <(sp?) or............?
the cheap fix is go to a hardware store that sell heavy duty rubber carpet runner by the foot and just buy a small piece and cut your self a small rectangular to fit your hoop and add a piece of two way tape on to it and then stick it on your bass hoop , presto fixed .

Hey fatty,
In the event you didn't quite understand leedybdp's excellent suggestion _ the moleskin patches can be found in the Foot Care section _ Dr Scholl's and other brands _ and can be used for both _ Bunions AND Bass Drum Heads.
I only mention this as I remember when I first started playing drums and heard this suggestion _ I had no idea what a Moleskin Patch was _ and it took me a while to figure it out _ and couldn't quite believe that the stuff in the Foot Care aisle was REALLY what they were talking about.
I kept looking for a Ludwig Moleskin Patch and such ... and never found em.
HA!!

Since I restored the hoops on my 24" Slingerland, I wanted to protect them.. for once..
Look for a roll of self adhesive Felt Strip (floor protecter for furniture). It's around 1" wide & the roll is about 2 feet. Local variety store should have it.
It sticks well.. cut a 4" strip for the inside of the batter hoop to protect from Pedal indents. I also put a couple of inches on the underside of the front hoop to protect against further scratching. This is heaps better than the rubber inserts & much cheaper.
Cheers

Lately I've jut been using a piece of thin cardboard folded over the hoop.
The moleskin, tape, and other items I've used with adhesive left residue on the hoop when removed, and in case of the moleskin a bit of the paint came off.
I had some of that rubber, textured, stuff that I line the bottoms of my tool box drawers with to keep the tools from sliding around. Anyways, I just cut that and used it and didnt notice anything negative about the hoop when I put the new double kick pedal on last month. Matter of fact, I cut a small piece for all of the claws on the hoops too.
