Be careful who you invite to your gigs Last viewed: 11 hours ago

We all like to invite friends and relatives to our gigs, but when I invited my cousin out and looked into the crowd at my last gig and saw my 89 year old aunt sitting next to my her, I thought to myself, oh boy. I noticed they were in the front row 15 feet away from a wall of 5 million watt speakers. I approached them and thanked them for coming, and said to them “I don’t think you should sit there” when they looked at me confused I knew right away they had no idea what they were in for. Then I remembered when talking to my cousin about my band, I did not remember her saying she listened to any of our music on our web site. I thought to myself, maybe they think I’m in some kind of Frank Valli Tribute band????.

So I went back on stage, and during our sound check I saw the look on my aunt’s face, which was one of shock and confusion.

Then when we started, and our guitar player broke out with Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner from woodstock, which led right into Foxy Lady, about half way through the song, they both disappeared. To make things worse, I told my wife what happened and she said “see, I told you that you guys play too loud, no wonder they left”

So goes rock n roll …….

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I have a million stories nearly identical to that!

-My wife...I love her to death. She is the reason I can do what I can do. When I started my metal/punk band called Yes! Yes! Take Off Your Dress! some years back, she was less than interested in supporting my musical ventures at the venue. Instead, she was supportive from the sofa which I respect 100%, but I still invited her to every gig we played. That band has slowed down quite a bit over the past couple years and my new band, The Crossroad Kings, has started to take off. She has made it to a few of those shows and has a blast. One day a few months back, YYTOYD was invited to play a show, so we did. My wife said since we were all a little older, a little more mature, and all arguably better musicians, she would attend. Since she is not really involved with the local "scene" she never knew we had a reputation as the loudest band in the area. I informed her to wear her ear plugs but she left them at home. She sat maybe 10' from the speakers! She lasted the whole night...but she was sure to tell me that we were more than a little loud. I was very happy to look out and see her smiling face all night long.

While I am a huge fan if inviting friends and family to shows, my family has been less than supportive as a whole of my music projects...but my wife continues to be my biggest fan. She really enjoys it when the band scrapes together enough to record cause she can listen to it at a level she can enjoy.

We don't really have a website yet (less than a year into it)...however The Crossroad Kings has a bandcamp page where you are more than welcome to download for free or listen from the internet to a few of our extremely early recordings off of our demo. We should really invest in some newer recordings cause the guitarist is 10X better, and the drums sound much better with my Pearls. As a group we really spent the past 3 months pushing our abilities to get better. It's really paid off! Those were cut after 3 months of knowing each other. My personal favorite is Back Door Man.

www.crossroadkings.bandcamp.com - I hope you enjoy!

The other band, Yes! Yes! Take Off Your Dress! had a myspace page which may still be up. We were VERY low budget!!! We had a CD out for a while, and enough new material to release a second. Only time will tell if that makes it out or not...
