Beach Boys Best Drummer Last viewed: 4 hours ago

You know, I just do not "get" the Beach Boys live. They always look like a bunch of guys that got together to play for a day. Pretty much all the videos I've ever seen with the possible exception of the very early stuff and even then it did not seem all that "band-like". Sure sometimes they have a string section and horns but to me they always seem like thrown together gigs by a bunch (and often quite a bunch) of guys that don't really do this for a living but just like to get together a play some music from time to time. I have produced a few corporate events where the company in questions will put together a "company jam band" for an evening. They look exactly like this every time.

I don't really get it. Certainly not what I would consider compelling performers. But perhaps that is just me. Cool to see Ringo though in whatever condition he might be in.

That is a great observation of them, When I saw them in Charlotte NC right before Dennis died, that is exactly what I saw also, it was very jam band music mentality. I was greatly disappointed, especially since I am a big BB fan. Here is a last friday performance on Fox channel. He did,and it's in my post on page one,so it's kind of ironic that the one Beatle song the BB's covered, and one of the only ones,Ringo didn't play on,but he still knew it,and was kicking some butt too.I'm figureing this thread is good for at least 3-4 pages though.

That looks NY based Guitarist Paul Gilbert, who can absolutely shred...so where's Al Jardine in that vid.Revolving door of band personell there..Brian Wilsons band does great BB tunes.

The influence of Hal Blaine's drum tracks, both in quantity and quality, trumps any other drummers contributions to the Beach Boys success. IMHO.

Any BBs footage from 63-73 is the prime era to go off of. After that its so hit&miss, but every&any band loses its freshness after a few years, I wish I coulda been there twenty yrs before my birth in their prime.

Nice collection of guest stars in general. I'm on a big Moody Blues kick, so seeing the Blue Jays there is fun. Also Danny Hutton (Three Dog Night).

Can't make out who's filling the David Marks/Jeff Foskett spot next to Carl, though, or the bass player.

Problem with me with "Good Vibrations" is that I HAVE to hear Blaine's(?) snare/tom stuff or it doesn't work.

And I agree about the company pick-up band stage presence since about 1976. Oh well.

Re: favorite drummer? Aside from Dennis, of course, Blaine or whoever played on the mid-'60's dates. Also sentimental toward John Cowsill, survivor of another dysfunctional family band.
