I was workning on my restoration of my 1961 super 400 and notice it timbre its so bell likeI'd say thats it is bell brass...just my opinion,,if so what does that say about mr. Ludwig

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
I'm not familiar with all the different variations of brass that are available...but knowing how the Ludwigs operated I'd guess that they used whatever brass they could get for the best price, just as long as it worked well enough for making their drums.
Gary - You're making a mistake in your use of the term 'bell-brass.' Bell-brass shells are cast, not flat stock, or spun. That along with the metal mix is what makes it bell-brass. The fact that it's a cast in sand item. Spun brass or sheet brass is a whole other thing. That's what Ludwig drums are made of, sheet brass.
