Benefits of Slingerland throw-off? Last viewed: 23 minutes ago

Hi all,

Are there advantages of either Slingerland's 3 point throw-off or the Clam Shell one? I see alot of love for the 3 point, but the Clam looks really art-deco cool.

I've never had either and I'm looking to buy a snare - any SOUND or FUNCTION benefits to either?

Thanks in advance

There was a recent long thread on this topic, w/ several players finding the Super Strainer (clamshell) problematic. Some solutions were offered that entailed some jerryrigging & finessing of the system to get it to work. (you might want to look this up in the archives). I've have several snares w/ both strainers, & find the 3 point totally better & easier to use. Sonically I can't say there is a difference. The Super Strainer is beautiful, but it basically, hardly moves a fraction of an inch, & has weak, overbuilt engineering.

Thanks. I tried a search, but maybe worded it badly. I'll look again.

Your cliff notes of the thread are just what I was looking for. :)

Go to page 21 of this section for the solutions to some problems. Look for the topic "Clamshell Strainer Tricks of the Trade", date 3-26-12. For the original discussion of the different strainers, go to page 24, date 3-18-12, look for "1938 Radio King Snare opinion"

You asked what the benefits are between the two throw offs.

For me a 3 point strainer = :) and a clamshell =
