Best deal ever??? (vintage ludwig content!) Last viewed: 21 hours ago

I'm a guitarist and just started out on the drums. Anyway, a series of lucky finds has landed me a none-to-shabby kit to learn on. I happened like this...

- Bought a set of 1966 Ludwig super classics (player condition) with some stands and a 1965 Slingerland snare. $150

- Bought a set of original Jack Dejhonette sig Sabians for $475 (hats, 2 crashes, ride, chinese)

- Sold the cymbals and stands for $600.

- Bought a 7 piece pearl from the 70's (beat up), this came with a late 60's 10 lug Slingerland Krupa brass snare, as well as stands and a full complement of vintage Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. $125

- Sold the pearl shells for $150!

So anyway that leaves me with the ludwig shells, 2 slingerland snares, and a set of vintage cymbals for the cool price of...

0.00$!!!

Could this be the best non inheritance based deal in history?

Here are some pics. Any tips on set up/care would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know where I can find a 22" fibre-skin resonant head with the old script ludwig logo on it. I'd like one for aesthetic's sake :)

You can buy logo's in plenty of places, especially big names like Ludwig ;). So you can just buy a head you want and put a Ludwig decal on it, if it's just for aesthetics.

Set up is sort of a personal thing, as are many things. Although I would (personally) put the toms more centered over the bass, you might prefer it the way you have it. It's just I normally use more like the standard rock set up :p.

Looks like a nice deal indeed. Not too knowledgeable on Sabians myself, but in the end it doesn't really matter how great a deal you get. As long as you're happy with them. (Of course it's always nice to have gotten what you wanted for a small price, but that's just my Dutch brains speaking :D).

There are some lucky souls who pulled rare kits from the trash in great condition. That's a pretty good deal too, you know. But since you're a guitarist, here you go: that's a really nice deal you got.

Now go play them :D. Or put some of that stuff in a big box and send it to the Netherlands ;)

You said best deal ever......but I got a better deal then that...........Ludwig wise.

20+ years ago,I bought a 1940's L and L Top Hat And Cane snare for $100 locally!

No extra holes......bought it from the original owners grandson.

Traded it for three-4 piece 20,13,16 + snare Gretsch kits.........12 drums for 1 drum.............

Flipped those for around $3,000 at the time.

BUT,the guy who got the snare now has a what value snare? $,5000? More?

that kit looks familar nice though

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Great deal...really nice kit.Too bad someone drilled the extra hole in the top of the bass drum. Those drums sound great.Take a look on ebay or most music stores will have the Ludwig script logo from the 60's decals you can affix yourself.Good luck...now where did I leave my 57' Les Paul ????....kidding.

Well played Blair! Ya I think I posted a whil ago when I just had the shells and was trying to figure out what I had. I think that most people assume guitars and the like have value of they find one lying around or taking up space, the same can't be said about drums! Thank god for spring cleaning.

One last question, how does a minor keyhole affect the value of a 60's A. Zildjian ride in otherwise nice shape?

From VanRosa

One last question, how does a minor keyhole affect the value of a 60's A. Zildjian ride in otherwise nice shape?

I'm no expert, but if I'm not mistaken, those 60's Avedis Zildjians aren't very rare (even I have one). So depending on how large a keyhole you're talking about, it affects "the value" little to significantly.

Thing is, if there are enough rides around, people won't buy one with a keyhole over one without a keyhole, unless it costs less. I know I wouldn't.

Of course, if it's only a very slight keyhole, some people might not really have a problem with that.

Again, I am no expert; especially not on cymbals.

NICE!

Seems like old Ludwigs are looking for new owners lately.

I found my 69' silver sparkle kit in a garage, brought it home for free.
