I have an old WFL 10x15 marching snare that I want to use as a tom with a “Levon” set I’m putting together. Anyone have a suggestion on a solid stand to use for this purpose? Though the drums are old 30’s/early 40’s models, I’m not so much interested in the stand being of that period as I am that it be sturdy and well balanced. I don’t want to drill into my old bass drum to attach a tom holder, so I believe a snare stand would be my best bet.
Best snare stand to hold a tom Last viewed: 9 hours ago
I use the Pearl S2000. It's sturdy, adjustable to various drum diameters and in my experience doesn't reduce the resonance of the tom.
:2Cents:
Pearl S-2000 hands down!!!
Here's a link to a review I did for the stand. I didn't post here because it wasn't "vintage" hardware.
Anyhoo... http://vdrums.com/forum/showthread.php?66084-Pearl-S-2000-Snare-Stand-Review
I use what ever brand of kit I'm using snare stand's, example on my Ludwig stainless steel kit my 12x15" tom which weights a ton. I use a Ludwig Atlas w/ swivel feet. if it my 30's Radio king kit I use a 30's slingerland snare stand, any stand will do just fine, I don't like to see modern stands on a vintage kit, your mileage may very.

+1 for that.
It depends on the weight of the drum too. If it's light enough, you may want to consider a flat base stand (preferably vintage, although a modern DW or Gibraltar wouldn't look too out of place). The reason I say flat base is that it would be easier to get closer to the center of the bass drum, because the flat base could slide "under" the bass drum so that the vertical shaft is right next to the bass drum. This is one of the reasons I don't like to use snare stands to mount toms....I can never get the tom close enough to the center of the bass drum for my liking.
However, with a 15" diameter, that might be a different story.
I chose a DW9000. Yes, it's modern, expensive, well engineered, and well built. I needed function more than look for my smaller sets. Glad I did because I just can't use the stock Ludwig tom mounts, very frustrating devices indeed.
