Thanks John, One last question to you all, does it hurt the value if a collector has replacement parts on it, the reason I ask is there is a Radio King student model on eBay that looks killer, except has replacement parts, for 165. Just curious. Again, Thanks for the advise, to all. Bucky

As mentioned above original is always better but in your price range those details are much less important than on higher end stuff. A $150 snare drum with a newer version of the throw off (say a P-85 in place of the original P-83) or some replacement rods is still probably worth $150. Perhaps it would be worth a bit more if the P-83 were still there but not a lot. Originality comes into play a lot more on things like old Black Beauties and other high end offerings where missing or replaced (newer) parts can seriously effect the value making a $2K snare into a $1.5K snare or whatever. Lots more range to work with on the higher end stuff, cheaper stuff probably only varies ten or twenty bucks at most. An exception might be a rewrapped drum which can cause a more sizeable hit but even then it's going to be a smaller dollar amount change than if done to a more expensive drum.

A six lug Sling can be had for less than 175.00,I would imagine U.S. made Kent would be in your budget.

Probably older single tension models could be had for your budget.

I would have to say it is totally dependent upon what you like. I have a bunch from Ludwig, Gretsch, Slingy, etc that I have paid under $175 for. The majority get pulled from the rack to get played but most sit to be admired. To me a lot of the fun in collecting is being patient and hunting for them. I really think there are way too many out there to say just one, but if I must.... One of my favorites in my collection is a 1963 Walberg & Auge Maple Marcher that I actually paid $95 for!

That's a beautiful W&A! Wow!

1960s Ralston (Star) set in Red Agate Pearl 12/12/16/20
1961 Ludwig Cocktail Lounge drum 24 x 16 in blue sparkle
1966 Ludwig Hollywoods in Sky Blue Pearl 12/13/16/22
1971 Ludwig Super Classics in Blue Sparkle 13/16/22
1976 Ludwig Vistalites in Blue 13/14/16/22
70s/80s Ludwig orphans in Black Cortex "Bonham" style 14/16/18/20/26 (B/O Badges)

CTMichaelV! I love your marching drum! Here are some pictures of my 1930's Slingerland Junior Boy Scout marching drum. All original, including the calfskin heads top and bottom! Paid about $115 for it 3 years ago.-Mark

I never head of a Boy Scout model drum! Very cool!

Here's a great under $175 brass snare (not my sale) in pretty awful shape, but way worth the price to fix up as a player. I play this model & couldn't be happier. Someone please give this guy a bath and remove the muffler from his vent-hole!
