Best snare wires pre serial COB snare Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I'm running some 20 strand pure sounds on my Luddy COB, but can't get the drum to be sensitive. I believe this drum is capable of sounding amazing, but it sounds kind of choked. Would 16 strands work better maybe? This thing is a legend, so I want to treat it right and start using it on some gigs.

I have spent a long time on this with my various vintage drums. I'll try to be brief.

1. These old vintage drums were not designed for wide snares. Most ran a 12 strand from the factory.

2. You can obviously put wider snares on them, with varying results, depending on the drum. Whatever works for you.

3. More snares = less 'drum' sound more 'snare' sound.

The COB Super has very narrow beds. I hunted around until I found a set of Steve Gadd Yamaha 12 strand wires and the drum sounds perfect for my taste. 16 strand Puresounds a second choice; but if you take off the bottom heads and measure the bed, then measure the snares, you will see the facts. I also picked up a tip from Bob Gatzen and now always use plastic on the butt end of the snare. This gives many snare wires a better sound as they are usually not designed for string anyway. Good luck. $00.02

I might just make my own Puresound equalizer snares, I have a couple 20's laying around. I just recently snipped the middle 12 snare wires from a set of 42 strand wires, and am running them on my Ludwig 402 snare.;)

The Puresounds -are- great... but in this instance (for a pre-serial COB) I think the very best way to go is, hit the bay and find a set of -original- wires! Nothing sounds quite as good as the wires that came with the drum from the factory. The old Ludwig wires are -finer- than modern wires and it really does affect the sound and sensitivity of the drum. In a pinch, go with Puresound, but if there are any original wires to be had, that's the way to go. Ever since I got my pre-serial COB, (it came with a pre-serial sky blue pearl Hollywood kit I purchased,) I have played it exclusively. It's just the best sounding snare drum I own. Go original if at all possible. The drum will sound the way it was meant to sound.

Hey Greg...good idea! I just might do that myself! I have a 30-stand set of Puresounds just sitting around...could stand to experiment a little.
