Most (perhaps all) of the clear maple interior wrapped 3 ply Ludwig drums I've ever seen still have a mahogany exterior ply under the wrap.
I think my favorite Ludwigs are the drums made from 62-63. The more modern hardware was introduced in '62 and the hoops and snares were still made of brass. Those drums are mostly mahogany/poplar/mahogany and they seem to sing. Of course I'd be happy with almost any era of drums from Ludwig's Chicago years.
