Okay, I've finished a 20 inch Slingerland floor tom in Mahogany.

It's a seventies 3-ply maple-pop-mahogany.

What successful head combinations have you cats used for a 20 inch floor?

Thanks all !!

What do you want it to do Kev? Do want it to sound like a gong drum or like a second bass drum etc. I don't think you're going to find too many guys that have ever seen a 20" floor tom much less owned and played one. Head choices would depend on what you want to get out of the drum. If you're going for tone, (gong drum) clear black dots or silver dots tuned high-ish will give you a good tone. If you want it flat, (2nd bass drum sound) the old stand-by's Ambassadors and Diplomats will likely get it done for you.

Photos please! I'd love to see this thing.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Hi John

I'm matching a 14,16,18, 26 set of 3-plys with her.

I'll set her off to the left of the hat stand, and use her as a floor, so I'm looking to control the huge overtones somewhat but keep most of the resonance. Just that good old vintage vibe is what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Kev

like mike said white coated emperor on top ambassador on bottom, just use your moongel to tone control it. but the felt strip will most decidely work.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

[QUOTE=Purdie Shuffle;158160] I don't think you're going to find too many guys that have ever seen a 20" floor tom much less owned and played one.

I had a WFL 20 FT. Nickel Hardware.

At the time , I couldn't get a stick to move the head enough for the right sound, or so I thought.

Made it into a Kick. Sold it.

Wish I kept it in the original condition. 20 inches.Yeah!!

Yes, felt strip across the bottom head as Mike T said, but I went with clear pin-stripes on both the batter and the reso heads of my monster Rogers swivo 20" FT; tuned both heads to the same pitch and mounted a cocktail pedal (with wood beater) to the hex leg. Positioned just left of the high-hat, it doubled as both a FT and a second bass. Thunderous effect playing the batter head with mallets while beating the bottom head with the cocktail pedal. Also used this 20" to substitute for a timpani roll in a show tune by opening up the top tone control and letting it ring.

Just my experience with the formidable 20" floor,

Mike C

I'd personally use a Emporer coated on the batter side and if available (hard to find) a Diplomat bottom.

i had a 70's chrome over wood sling 18x 20 in ft and it was stock heads and sounded like a timpani to me

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
