Brass Ludwig Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So its been asked hundreds of times!LOL.. I did my research and have assumed that this snare is 99% brass. I have not done the scratch test to be 100%. I didn't want to molest it yet. See the pics, Red Felt, COB hoops, Pre Serial, and Rolled bearing edge flange crimped beds. Which was used on Super Ludwigs I think, but this looks like a spun shell. Not sure which lug but I think the later ones? No pitting or flaking on the shell that I could see. Weighs about 8.6 pounds with hoops and lugs and heads.

Just wanted some assurance that I am thinking realistically and not dreaming.

Thanks ,Ed

It's pretty obvious that it is brass. DO NOT DO THE SCRATCH TEST! Congratulations on finding an awesome drum!

That's a COB alright. Grab it before somebody else does!

Nice find. Mine is one of my favorite snares that I own.

So I offered $600 and the owner wants to put it up on the Bay to see what it can bring starting at 599.99.

I have a 66 Supra in Ludalloy that is in in great shape. I might have posted in the gallery here or somewhere. So I saw this on the shelf! A nice Rogers Powertone! Very good condition with original snares. Offered $300 and he accepted. Thats about what they go for or less even maybe $275 in this shape. But it wasn't about money. The initials inside the drum from the assembler are the same as mine. Karma kinda!!

So I am happy with this drum as I prefer 8 lugs to 10 anyway. And it is brass!

When the Supra is listed I will post it up here.

Thanks,Ed

Ed - The pre-serial brass ones are not 'Supra's.' They are called Ludwig 'Supers'. The Ludwig Super 400 to be precise. Great drums. I love mine. Hope somebody here gets it.

Thanks VM2K!! I have played Powertones before, and they are GREAT drums!

I have 2 wood Powertones that I FINALLY was able to tune up. From some advice here and at the ROF I just had to go a tad higher than I am used to.

I have a nice 60s Chrome Dyna that I enjoy but don't really play out much as I like the sound of wood myself. Slingy wood Artists from the 60s are killer IMHO. But I needed to add the Powertone to my collection so the price was right for me and I am glad I did it.

Purdie thanks for the info,I will pass it on!

Cheers,Ed
