Bread and Butter Lugs Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hey all

I may have an opportunity to purchase a Rogers set with bread and butter lugs. I know they have a tendency to crack.

This set would be used for playing and gigging. Am I asking for trouble with the bread and butter lugs - are they going to constantly be cracking and needing to be sourced/replaced to a point where it is not worth the trouble and I'll be sorry?

Thanks for you point of view!

John

Well, I have been restoring a B&B set for about a year, and still need some large lugs. They are tough to find uncracked. There are ways to reenforce them for playing, even if cracked. Check out here for that info.

I don't know if you guys have heard of JP2 Creations (Jim Petty), but he has steel repros - I think he makes them himself. They are a bit pricey, though - but he says on his site that he'll work with you if you're needing to replace a lot of them. Here's the link to his site: http://www.jp2creations.com/. Click the "Parts" link on the left of the page, then "Bread & Butter Lug Casings" on the parts page.

I hope this helps and you!

I can say only one thing - I have purchased many items from Jim Petty and although I have had to be patient from time to time, some times waiting two months or longer, I have always received excellent products for a price that I believed was a bargain because the part just wasn't available anywhere else. For example a Gretsch Microsensitive strainer lever. Granted, I had to do a little research and determine exactly which thread was correct.

He unfortunately does not take credit cards or use Paypal so you have to send him a personal check and wait for it to clear - that's why he cashes it immediately. Also, you may have to wait for him to receive several orders for an item before he will make a production run - he doesn't maintain a large inventory because most of his items are so specialized, like the correct rubber tips for a Dynasonic ladder style snare frame - try to find those somewhere else. I've always been able to reach him with a little persistence - I think he may have another day job.

I believe you have to be patient. If you read the blog, he offered the complainant a refund. He is a very small operator. Some people think finding this stuff is like shopping at Target. Some people just can't be made happy. I think we're fortunate to have Jim Petty making this stuff. If you don't like his customer service, just try to find his stuff somewhere else.

Thanks SlingerLynn, I didn't know he offer the B&B lugs!

You are very welcome! I too have had to be patient with him for a couple months now. But, as you say, no one else has the parts I need - clam shell strainer and butt parts...or the riveted on rubber feet for a 60-70 year old Slingerland Epic hihat stand...and other items that are hard to find at a reasonable price. He told me up front that it would be several weeks before he finished a run of L-arms and clam shell parts, so I just call him every few weeks to check on the status. We have a nice chat about every other time I call - he's always been nice to me.
