Duct tape is 'the Force' defined:It has a light side, a dark side and it binds the universe together.DOH

Agreed with the star wars analogy.I broke my first head at a gig, right at the end of a tune, and at the end of the set.As I had the beater adjusted off center, and the hole was half mood shaped.I was able to rotate the head 180 degrees, and duct tape around the hole so we could finish the night. At 16,I just wasn't thinking that it could happen at a gig.

Just as an aside,I saw Liberty DeVeto break a bass drum head with Billy Joel,at the Nassau Colesseum.Billy kind of riffed around a little, talked to the audience, and then played "She's Got A Way",which is just him and the piano.

The drum tech and I assume another tech, buzzed like bees around the kit,and without really moving the drums at all, replaced the head with the aid of a few rechargable screwdrivers and had the new head on and in tune(don't ask me how) before Billy finished the song.

The whole thing was seamless, and quick...no drama and just an artist and crew doing what could have been a big glitch, and not even losing a step or breaking a sweat. To the uneducated,it probably just looked like part of the show.

This thread totally jinxed me tonight halfway through the first set in the middle of Proud Mary Ike & Tina Turner version. Thankfully the keyboard player had a roll of Gorilla duct tape. I doubled up the tape doing 5 strips vertical and then another 5 strips horizontal over that. I started out being gentle until I realized this stuff is as tough as the drum head. I gradually built up my strokes to my normal volume and it made it through the rest of the night. It sounded like kucka to me but our sound man managed to make it sound good out front. I was bummed that it happened since I had the bass all dialed in and really boomin' and then I had to deal with a wet cardboard box sound but I'm just glad it got me through the night. I've had it happen a number of other times and the sense of panic never changes. But hey now I know how well Gorilla tape holds up.
