I'm in two bands but still feel under-employed. Want to set up an improv deal for happy hour shows locally - just show up and jam, tastefully. Now *that* is my idea of fun. Alls I need is some really great players and a venue lol.

I find myself in a paradoxical situation. I want to play to audiences...but not really willing to play 4 hour late night gigs in bars like I did 20 years ago. Ideally I'd like to be in a really good band that plays 2-3 jobs a month in nice venues...but then who wouldn't? My jazz trio plays sporadically but we aren't really in a part of the country where jazz is sought after. Chicago is just 100 miles to the east but of course they have their own home grown world class jazz players (also hunting for work) and no need for a trio of ex-rockers living out a jazz fantasy.
I was in a band that met my ideal criteria for almost exactly 10 years. It was an 11 piece band and we played maybe 3 gigs a month at the most, we did a two-three hour show and mostly played in venues other than bars for really good pay. But, like most bands inevitably do, it fell apart (in 2012).
Meanwhile the drums continue to pile up around here despite lack of justification for having them...but what the hey? I like having them and it's not hurting anything. Loved playing these burgundy drums last night. And the group I was sitting in with was all people in their 70's- 80's so maybe there is still hope down the road.
I have enough gigs but have to play in 4 bands in order to keep busy.To tell you the truth i could care less about playing out in the"dead of winter"(Jan.&Feb.)at least in this neck of the woods.Hauling heavy gear over frozen snow banks at three in the morning just doesn`t wind my clock as much these days-must be age creeping up there,ha.
Beautiful set of Ludwigs in a georgeus colour Kevin and i know they sound every bit as good as they look.May you play them for many years to come...

Just got these this morning. They were on San Diego CL for maybe 2 hours yesterday Friday The 13th. Yes, that's a 1965 Downbeat kit in Burgundy Sparkle. I still can't believe it..
Wow! What a snag. Even I'm jealous as I covet the downbeat sizes.
Just goes to show what's still out there. How is the color...mine are sort of right on the edge between purple and brown depending on how the light hits them. That seems very common with this color.
I got a text a couple weeks back from a friend asking if I was interested in some Burgundy sparkle drums. I said sure but they'd have to be crazy cheap. They weren't quite "crazy" cheap but the price was too attractive to let them pass...I knew I would ALWAYS regret it if I did (not realizing that my true set was in San Diego all along ;) ).
After last night I know it was a good call on buying these...very cool drums.
Nice pies too, by the way...
I hear ya about playing too, although a 4 hour gig would suit me fine; we usually have 2 other bands on the bill. But them snowbanks [shudder]. Just heading out for a show now, breakables only so not too bad to haul over the snow...:)
