who has mucked around with one of these? just picked up my cb700 f/b congas the other day and thought that is where my hand percussion ended, but just stumbled across the cajon, drum kit in a box? any thoughts?
cajon? Last viewed: 7 hours ago
Very cool.
I have been thinking about it because my Wife does Flamenco dancing, and they have live musicians once in a while with a Cajon.
To play with the Flamenco rhythms is not easy! It is a base 12 usually (which seems easy enough) but it is very non-intuitive and has to be counted 12:4 for best results; 4X 3:4 and 3X 4:4 doesn't work.
Playing it is pretty easy actually. Are you looking at a 'snare' version? The older ones did not have this, but I think it adds another dimension to these. You can play them anywhere on the box for almost limitless sounds.

i would get a snare cajon as i would use it for unplugged rock music. the only thing i find it lacks when performed with rock music is the absence of a crash cymbal, do'nt like smacking cymbals with my hands. i guess like most hand percussionists there are techniques to over come this.
Go old school- mount a crash to a foot pedal...

I just picked up the Gon-Bop Mixto Cajon. It is two sided. It has traditional on one side and snare on the other. Compared to most it has a really nice rich low bass note. The snare side I thought is lacking a bit. For kicks I just placed a set of 14" 20 strand wires loose on the interior bottom. It added just a bit more snare sound but still doesn't interfere with the bass. At $315 it's not cheap but it also won't break the bank. IMO it has the best tone of Cajons in the $300 range.
