A couple of other notes:That is a Cleveland shell with a Dayton tag.Probably a 5 ply maple shell.Dave

No fool-proof, precise dating with Rogers' grab-any-tag production line, but a Dayton Powertone label #19574 should place it around 1968. Cleveland shell? Why? 5-ply shell with 5-ply rerings standard for Daytons through Fullertons. Early Dayton's also had gray interiors with round screws. Change to hex screws was sometime in 1968. Except for t-rods, bottom hoop, and butt plate mods, this looks all Dayton.

What's the Dayton vs Cleveland thing all about?

CBS bought Rogers in 1966. The plant stayed in Covington (headquarters had been in Cleveland at the offices of Grossman Music), but CBS had offices and a warehouse in Dayton. The drums remained identical for close to a year, then the inside paint changed ,and a number of small details began to change over the next few years. They moved to Fullerton Ca in 1969.

Some collectors want the Cleveland stuff most of all, the early Dayton being the same, but once the Dayton-speckled paint drums come along, things change for those collectors.

All of Rogers drums are excellent, but the Cleveland/Grossman stuff is the most highly prized by many...

Surf: as DanC said, that's an early Dayton drum with a shell identical to a Cleveland era Powertone snare. It is 5 ply Maple Polar M-P-M with same for re-rings. I have a mint, correct butt plate if you want it. Clean it and play it, bro!

I've actually already ordered a correct butt plate, but thanks anyway...

Thanks to all for the crash coarse in the Rogers world...I'm mostly a Made In Japan guy (mostly because it's a more affordable hobby), but I definitely long to own a classic American kit...maybe I can build this Rogers kit up...

Best part is, I got this snare for free!

Quick story: About 15 years ago I sat in on bass guitar with a surf combo, just for basement jams...I used to always see a bunch of drums stacked up under the stairs.

The band mentioned they needed a PA system, I said I had a Peavy system they could buy, but they said they had no money.

I said "What's with the drums under the stairs? Wanna trade?" They laughed thinking I was nuts, so I hauled them home. Turned out to be two complete kits with no hardware...

I kept the red sparkle Whitehall 4 piece with matching snare and gave the black late 70's CB700 five piece to my brother. This Rogers snare was with the CB700 kit. My brother just gave me the snare back. Said he was done with it...

Well, you've got a great drum there and ya can't beat the price! And Red Onyx is a very cool color! Good luck in your quest.
