Correct K.O., and it is an "M". It designates a "maple" exterior ply. Closed, tight grain better for painting/staining. The outer ply of the "P" shells is mahogany. Open, course grain which holds glue better.

Thanks. I was pretty sure, but not certain, that it was an "M" for "maple"...but considered it could possibly be a "W" for "wood". Before posting I scanned through my copy of Rob Cook's Slingerland book but didn't find the answer there.

Close Lynn, according to DrCJW badges did not appear on toms until June '66. Marching toms are an exception. Serial numbers on bass and snare drums began Oct. '62.

Ah, thanks for the correction. I recall now that I had a '65 Slingerland 12" shell that had no badge/vent. Don't know how that slipped.

Info is per DrCJW, available here and at VDG. Rob Cook's book is most useful as a history of Slingerland. Not so good for drum specifics/identification/dating.

Well I've got a mate who owns 20,12,14, jazz kit all with badges and serial nos date stamped Oct 1964. odd part is the FT badge is directly above one of the FT legs which Slingerland never did to my knowledge, however the Slinger/Leedy toms from that era did.Maybe these shells ended up in the Niles factory predrilled? who knows. That's just my theory.:2Cents:

Leedy/Slingerland toms did not have badges '61-mid '66. Sounds like a post factory addition. Or another Slingerland oddity.

So this 12" could be from the 60s? My floor tom is definitely 60s and has clear interior

Tom, are you referring to your 12" Red Tiger Pearl tom? From what you have shown us that is a 70's model (probably late '71-'72). Can't comment on the floor tom without more info/pictures.
