Are camco spurs 5/16" square stock just like vintage ludwig?

The simple answer is yes. Differences are in the curvature and location of the roll pins that act as a stop so that the spurs cannot be retracted past the spur brackets.

Ludwig spurs are in the first photo, Camco in the second.

I did notice the curvature is different when I was looking at both brands on ebay. I wonder which one would actually work the best for my needs. I suppose I have to dig around to find a photo of some zickos ones!

The Zickos ones are the same as Camco (in fact, they were Camco).

You’re very welcome,...It seems that during the first half of the Oaklawn period, both versions were used. (1961-1965) Most of the „round” mounts can be found on the earlier and smaller bass drums. Like everything with Camco, things are never black and white. My 4-ply 22” Champagne sparkle bass drum is the earliest while it has the „later” curved spurs. The Natural Maple set has the „earlier” version of „round” bass drum spurs but the drum itself is later 6-ply,...

Stedi, I don't know if the Camco curved spurs can be classified as "later" since George Way drums had curved spurs as well. The first George Way catalog has drums illustrated with straight spurs, while the later Way catalog shows more drums with the curved spurs. It may just have been a choice that purchasers had by the time of the Camco era.

Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing on your thread. I landed here searching for the exact same information and thought any help I get would be valid for future researchers. I have what I believe to be a very early Camco kit and I'm trying to verify if some of the parts that don't look Camco may be leftover George Way parts. Or, I fell for the banana in the tailpipe when I was told the kit is "all original". I've seen some "blurry" pics that give me hope these are original parts, but more to George Way than Camco. My questions here are about the floor tom brackets and wing screw as well as the wing screw on the bass drum spur mount. The screw on bass drum spur mount is the one that definitely looks wrong to me, but then I saw a photo of a George Way floor tom with the same type of wing screw. I've seen these types of wing screws on Slingerland Radio King hardware.Any clarity on these parts would be much appreciated. I'm attaching some photos. Giving a photo courtesy to musicradar.com for the photo of the BDP floor tom. Thanks

Dan, those parts are all original. I have the same floor tom leg mounts and wing nuts on a couple of George Way floor toms. I also have the same round wing nuts on the spur mounts.

Saying this, George Way drums only used round spur mounts; the mount plate was a Camco addition. Looking at the photos that you and Stedi posted with the clipped spur mount plates, it appears (as it may have been suggested already) that they were George Way shells being adapted to Camco's new specs, hence the mount plates. If the shell were already drilled for spur mounts, they would have been too close to the lugs for the plates to fit, and that would then explain why they are clipped. Saying this, I notice on my George Way kit that the round spur mounts are actually adjacent to the lugs - you can barely get a fingernail between them - so the spacing isn't the same as on the drums you and Stedi have. The kit I am looking at is c. 1958, so it could be that Way drilled the spur mount holes in a different position later on, but we would need to look at more examples to see if this is the case.

The most important thing is that everything I'm seeing on your kit is correct for an early transitional Way/Camco kit.

I've just seen a George Way gold sparkle 22 in bass drum for sale on Reverb that has a good photo of the positioning of the spur mount, as well as of the round wing nut. The mount isn't as close to the lug as it is on my drum, but it's in the ballpark.
