Camco lug insert question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I have 8 Camco tom lugs that are in need of the tension rod inserts.

Are these a "standard" size that can be had from one of the drum supply houses?

If not, is there an alternative to finding originals?

I am also in need of 6 more tom lugs.... 8 or 10 snare lugs, and a throw off and butt.

Jinx - The parts you're looking for are all currently for sale on Fleabay. As for the inserts, I hope Steve chimes in for you, I would have to look at the base of the insert to see if it's 'standard' or not and all the lugs I own are currently on my drums holding down heads and hoops! I'd have to take a drum apart for you to answer your question. Hopefully, Steve (Dolfan) will chime in soon.

Howz it goin' bud? I've heard nothing but good news and good reviews about your new Blaemires. I'm still waiting to be able to order a kit for myself. It's on my bucket list!

Warm regards,

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I'm kind of looking at the opposite.

I'm trying to get rid of the inserts from some DW lugs so I can retire some badly damaged Camco lugs - the Camco inserts are the same length as the DW (around 22mm) but the square-ended Camcos won't fit into the DW lug (the DW inserts have a hexagonal base and that very irritating tighter thread - which is why I want to get rid of them).

Now I don't have much experience with other brands but the Camco inserts look to be identical with the longer ones you can currently get online.

If anyone's got any tips on replacing the DW inserts with normal thread inserts, please let me know as well.

Can't help you with parts but here is a couple of photos of inserts and lugs. Most of what you need is for sale on ebay except the throw off and they are really hard to find. I would not recommend after market inserts because if the base isn't wide enough it will cause serious and permanent damage to the lug. It would probably be better to have the old Camco steel inserts chromed. #1 is mid 70s L.A. era. #2 dw lug with new inserts. #3 Camco lug on left and a dw on the right. The last photo is of a Camco insert on the left with a 1990s dw in the middle and a modern dw insert on the right.

Thanks Slingalud...

I dont even have the old inserts to re-chrome. The kit came with these 8 lugs on the bottom of a floor tom that was missing all the inserts.

I will look for some nasty Camco lugs to steal the inserts from.

The current generic inserts (the 21mm long ones) look like they will fit the lugs - I heading off to buy some today for the DW lugs but will try them in my Camcos and let you know how I get on (if the local drum shop has them on stock as well.

Though they may occasionally come up on ebay it's usually part of a complete lug or set of lugs at outrageous prices courtesy of the drum strippers who seem intent on taking apart any remaining Camco drums.

If the generics work, I'd use them at least to start with. Will let you know.

How many Camco inserts do you need? ( 8 ?) I might have a few extra in my parts bin.

Just done some trying out of swivel nut inserts.

Modern 21mm inserts (at least the ones I've found) do NOT fit into old Camco lugs - it's a fraction of a millimetre we're talking about. I guess if you really forced them or lightly filed, they would fit (but you'd also be messing with the lugs so that would be a bad idea.

They do however fit into DW lugs which, while not ideal, at least means there's reasonably available replacement lugs if the original Camcos get messed up.
