Camco Oaklawn restoration, before and after pictures. Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I'm going to have to decide when I take the wrap off which way to go (that is, if I ever do take the wrap off).

You have to wonder why they wrapped them to begin with - covering something up???

But hippiemuzack's set looks like it had great looking wood underneath, and of course even better looking now.

I considered it for a stripped Rogers kit, but sold them to someone who wanted to rewrap. The original red glass was spotched, cracked, crazed and about every other way was toast. But the maple underneath was really good. If I'd seen this Camco kit then, I might have done something different.

From hippiemuzaak

I bought myself a Camco Oaklawn in 20,12,16 a while ago. It was wrapped in a blue satin finish, not like the original moire, much uglier. I've always been a fan of wood finishes so i decided to bring out the maple on these drums. Just wanted to share som pictures from the restoration process and the final result:StrippedFirst layerThen come the walnut. After that, 1 layer of oil, two times a day, everyday for 18 days!Voila! All hardware was polished. I switched out the original bass drum hoop clams to new ones because the old were really rusty and impossible to get in good shape.Best kit i've owned!

Great job! Gotta say..not feeling the blue inlays in the hoops though...

Those hoops still has the old wrap inlay. Doesn't look good i know, but haven't had the time to swap them out :)

I believe your set was most likely a natural finish originally and was subsequently wrapped. The standard technique was to use clear interiors on naturally finished drums and white interiors on wrapped drums. Yours seem to have had natural finish inside, so that is my guess. My set is the same with a later moire or satin, but the insides are clear. If you look at the tom in the second photo, you'll see that. I'm thinking of doing something similar to what you have done, at some juncture, though I have been a bit tempted to use merlot sparkle because I had a burgandy sparkle set back in the early 90's.

Love the Blues... what do you mean it is a later satin? Were the earlier ones more, Aqua?

Don't rewrap that kit! It's gorgeous and it's only original once!

How about staining and oiling two strips of maple veneer and use those as inlays?
