Can anyone help me date my (new) Acrolite snare? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi, all - I recently spied an ebay posting that was obviously from a non-drummer. The posting didn't describe or depict well what was being sold. One of the photos led me to believe the item was a Ludwig Acrolite, complete with case and stand. I was the only bidder and won the item for $76.

The snare arrived yesterday, and it is in near-perfect condition. It is in fact a 5 x 14 Acrolite with case, stand, drum key, etc. I'm a happy buyer.

Can anyone help me date this drum? SN 3055766

If it is a blue/olive badge I would say post 1979, with it having 7 numbers in the serial.

probably 82-84. most likely the last run of the b/o badges before the black galaxy acro was introduced.

I agree with Mike. I just picked up the new "Ludwig Serial Number Dating Guide" book by Richard Gier, and his research shows that your SN 3055766 would be 1982.

When were the Black Galaxies introduced anyway? I was under the impression they were relatively new, as in last 10 years. I bought mine about 4 years ago, looked brand new! One of the best $50 I'd ever spent!

not exactly sure. the 88 catalog still shows the b/o badge model. but Ludwig was known to use old pics in many instances. the 94 catalog does show the black galaxy models in 5x14 and 6.5x14.

Some really good info here: http://tinyurl.com/m3u58pt

In it, ludwigvondrumcrazy wrote "In 1993 Ludwig switched over to the “Black Galaxy” Powder Coating which they still use today."

Nice! I think you got it for a good price! It's the blue and olive badge with the rounded edges. I believe this badge was introduced toward the end of the 70's. I used to own the pointy blue and olive badge which was a 77 if my memory serves me correctly. They're a great snare drum. Get yourself a coated Ambassador and an Ambassador resonant head. I've tried this snare with many different heads, but the Ambassadors worked best for me. Enjoy the snare. It's a classic!
