can my thin shell bass drum stand the stress? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi All -

been away for awhile. I need some advice and I am hoping the answer to my question is NO, it will not ruin the shell. I recently acquired a Conway built mid 90's Slingerland Studio King set. It has a virgin bass drum with a rather thin shell. Seems to be 9 ply or so but cant tell for sure because of my eye sight. I am commiting a mortal sin and have decided to drill for a new consolette rail mount. It will be holding an 8x12 tom that is equipped with standard Slingy lugs and die cast hoops. Since the bass drum shell is thin, do you think the extra weight on it will eventually ruin the shell? I play maybe 2 hours per week and I remove the tom when the kit sits idly. Thanks so much

I would not make any holes.

They never go away.

thanks guys.

I am 62 and I will not be selling this kit. The negative effect on the resale value that the extra holes will have doesn't really concern me at this point.

Well by golly you should have one.

You have got to be comfortable on your kit.

And besides.....it is yours.

I only mentioned not drilling because of my experience with drums I had in my 20's on which I drilled holes everywhere.

Having restored them, I was unhappy with every hole I came upon

drilled by................ me.

9 ply? That could hold a small cabinet. Your tom will hang in there just fine.

If you cannot see the plys?

Take a picture (phone/digital camera) and let us help you figure it.

PS Your birthday and mine are pretty darn close dude.

thanks for the encouraging response. Instead of measuring the plies, I measured the mm's. Seems to close to 6 millimeters. Hope that will do. I bought the DW retro rail mount. Some decent reviews.

I'm having Jack Lawton in Sunbury, Pa.do the installing for me. His work is top notch and he's a great guy. When it comes to carpentry, I'm not exactly St. Joseph.
