Can you all help ID a vintage Slingerland snare here? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Before I possibly screw up my first posts, I'm asking first!

I have an old Slingerland snare that was my grandfathers, had it since the 70's when I was a kid. Is this the place I can post pics to see if it can be ID'd for era of make, problems/pluses, etc?

If it is OK, what pics would best assist in this endeavor?

Thanks!

....and "Howdy" everybody!

Here she is. The flash is making the corrosion look worse than it is, you can feel it with your fingertips, but it isn't pitted badly.

Here's the tragic part. Back in early 80's I took it to Milano's Music in Mesa, AZ (I'm using their name because I'm still seriously ****ed) with a broken strainer and to basically get it back into functioning shape so I could use it. When I got it back they said the throwoff was useless and they screwed on a generic "Made In Japan" unit you see here. At the time I was 15 and too naive to know better, but with the internet in the 90's I realized I was taken - that baby was worth a bunch. They also took the internal twin-pad muffler off too.

The rest is in great shape - original hardware, hoops, etc. The shell isn't cracked and the mother of pearl isn't bubbled or peeling. The closest I can come to matching it to anything is the picture on the Vintage Drum Guide - where an identical looking one is from the 40's.

Thanks for any and all info you can give me.

(Thx webmaster - couldn't figure out the sizing!!!)

yeah you've got a mid to late 40's Slingerland radio king, snare drum what is it a 7x14"? the new strainer there should be extra holes from the three point strainer Am I correct? the strainer the store took sales for $100.00 +today. Ok After looking at this in detail I'm confounded, post a pic of the butt end and inside the shell also the groument from the inside!

Yes, it is a 7" x 14" size. The replacement strainer-holder covers the original mounting location. It uses one of what looks like could be three original holes in a triangle pattern, is that what you mean?

Do you have a pic of what the correct holder should look like?

I have a lead on the muffler and replacing the holder would make it pretty close to original again.

Thanks for your time.

This is the inside view, with the grommet to the nameplate on the left, and the holes and screws holding the control side of the strainer holder.

This is the static side of the strainer holder.

I don't know if the holes from the holder you show in the link you sent matches up with the holes in the shell.

But... Is it possible when they replaced the strainer holder, they put the active side of the current one where the static old one was, and put the static new one where the operational old one was (swapped sides?)?

Again, thanks for taking the time to look into this.

I believe this is your drum here and it has this strainer on it, http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1951_catalog_large.jpg

The Hollywood Ace or the Gene Krupa? From the (lack of) holes on my shell, I'm guessing the Krupa model.

That is a cool strainer control! Off to the internets to see what I can find.

Any idea of a value for this?

Is this the correct muffler for it? The holes look correct for it.
