Carmine Appice and Big Ludwigs Last viewed: 3 hours ago

A tune just entered my head this morning out of nowhere except many years of memories. It was, You Keep Me Hangin' On, as done by Vanilla Fudge. So I YouTube'd it and was amazed with the Ludwig sound and performance that Carmine Appice delivered on the particular occasion of he vid that came up as the first selection.

So clearly a progression from the Rascals and Dino Danelli with increased power, timing, and showmanship. Completely amazing, and also leading into what Bonham had eventually done in Led Zeplin.

Take a listen to that massive bass drum and the crack he got out of that Supraphonic. What a powerful player. He must have consumed a lot of sticks! Check back to slightly earlier 60's work of the Rascals to compare the styles and you will find it very interesting.

you know...I like the comparison to Dino Dinelli - one of my drumming heroes when I was a little sprout - of course, their styles and music are light years apart - but both had a powerful groove that you could drive a freight train on

Listening to (and watching) this, you can't help but feel that John Bonham must have copped a little of Carmine's style when Led Zep toured as the opening act for Vanilla Fudge.

Check the Rascal videos and watch all of the arm motion Danelli used. Then watch Carmine again. It's quite remarkable.

PS - Did Carmine sneak in a Dynasonic on that performance???? i think i see the frame support on the bottom hoop and the lugs look like Rogers, not Ludwig. note the dryer sound too. Hmmm.....Excited

The kit Carmine used before he got his Ludwig endorsement, the one he used with the fudge was a gretsch kit with a 15x26" leedy ludwig bass drum it was originally white marine pearl he pulled off that wrap and replaced it with red sparkle the kit is in the video on this post. This info is from carmine himself out of an interview from traps magazine issue 9 spring 2009.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

i saw them in the mid sixty's at electric playground in Chicago, then again in the blues room at marina towers in Chicago hes still a big guy, towers over his kit, for some reason after that gig they stopped touring , no one was there, i was so impressed with them,in the 60's when i saw them, there hair was much longer than in the video, me there with my jaw dropped with my neru shirt and elephant bells, what a time, it was so electric, they inspired me! my last band played that song it takes some guts to do that one....

"you just keep me hangin on,... why do you keep coming around and playing with my heart".......i sang it also

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Far out is right,i was not a Carmine Appice fan and not from his showmanship, chops and power, but from his ego.It took me a long while to realize this, as i loved Carmine for his playing and then i started to understand what he was really all about(himself).Nothing against self promotion but he did step over the line in my personal view of a professional player, but that`s just my personal opinion.I will always love his playing tho`...
