Chrome Re-plating on die-cast and stick-chopper hoops Last viewed: 16 minutes ago

I'm just now looking into having the hoops re-chromed on my late 50's Gretsch kit. When I mentioned Die-Cast to the re-chroming foundry/factory owner that does a lot of chroming for automobiles he said 'you mean your hoops are made of Pot Metal?"

I said they're probably triple chromed. I don't know. He said triple chrome plating generally means what they have to do to get the chrome to stick to the metal. The process is copper, nickel (I don't know the order) and then chrome on top of that.

First....is this right? Are my die-cast hoops from the 50's "pot metal?"

Second... does anyone here have experience with having drum hoops....Gretsch Die-Cast and/or Stick-Chopper hoops.....re-chromed?

What should I be telling the re-chromer and what do I want exactly?

What would a resonable cost be....per hoop for instance. I think he quoted me $60/hoop and if I wanted Gold Plating it would be 1/2 again ($90/hoop). Does that sound resonable?

Does anyone here know how to chrome plate die-cast rims. How does Gretsch do it? If die-cast rims are pot metal does that mean the are more difficult to chrome - they have to be triple plated = copper/zink and then chrome - right?

Yes Mark - I think they will.

I'm trying to get up-to-speed and learn as much about it as I can before I step into a shop with my goods....next week.

It's not a matter of not trusting them - it's simply that I want to know all I can about how the Gretsch folks did the plating and about the materials involved. It's iteresting stuff to me.

Just thought someone here would have had their Gretsch hoops plated and already been down-that-road and could pass that info on here.
