I recently got a early 80's Rocker kit and when I went to change the bottom head, I noticed that there is a chunk (about 1/2") missing on the bottom bearing edge. Looks like it may have been dropped without the head on it. The drum sounds good but I was wondering how much this is effecting the sound? I don't have a pic but will try to get one to upload. Would some wood filler work? Then sand it down in that spot?

Wood filler does sound like the way to go. Once you are able to post some pictures, we can make a better determination.

Not wood filler, but rather Kwikwood stick epoxy putty.
Regular dough type wood filler is too soft and does not have sufficient structural integrity.
Bondo will also work well.
Using KwikWood or Bondo will result in a repair that is just as strong and resonant as the original shell.
Regular wood filler might not even hold up to the pressure of a tight drumhead.
Seems like the question of what to use to repair shell damage is getting asked often enough that it deserves a sticky.

I took the bottom head and off and got some pics. The part that is messed up/missing, barely affects where the head touches the shell, if at all. The drum tunes well and sounds good to me. I may just leave it. Not sure what the black looking line is from but it isn't a crack
Doesn't appear to need immediate attention, if any. I'd play it for 6 months or so and take another look to see if anything is moving. It has probably done everything it's going to do in the last 30 or so years.
Got any pics of the kit? We like pics! (yea, me and my mouse)

Yeah, I figure it shouldn't change much as old as this kit is. I don't think it has effected the way it sounds because it sounds great. I will upload some pics of my kit soon. I ordered a white vintage Ludwig head for the kick drum. I will take some pics once I get it installed.
