Cleaning maple classic shells - advice please Last viewed: 2 hours ago

What do you guys clean your shells (maple classic, not wrap) with?

Some guy told me to use a high dollar car wax, but I'm not sure that's the best method. I know on hardware....fine steel wool then polish but what about the shells? Thanks

A high quality wax certainly won"t hurt the shells...someone here can probably tell you from experience which one would work the best.. don't use fine steel on the chrome, even 0000 grade will leave small scratches...just clean the parts with a light detergent like Dove, then polish with something like Flitz or Simichrome using a soft cotton cloth.

Maybe just buff them with a good quality soft cloth. If you have time on your hands then a wax shouldn't hurt, but unless your drums are filthy I would of thought just a good dustin will do.

Lenny - No steel wool on chromed hardware - ever! You can't see it right away, but even the finest grade of steel wool will -remove material- and leave micro-scratches behind that will over time badly dull the hardware. Just about any quality metal polish and some cotton rags (I use cut up old tee-shirts)will do the trick. Stay away from -any- abrasives when cleaning your hardware.

The steel wool is a softer metal than the chrome, what it does is leave behind micro-scratches that build up over time. You can get away with using steel wool just a few times before your hardware starts to dull. I was taught by some experienced drum-restorers never to use steel wool on chrome. I figure they learned from experience, so what's good enough for them, is good enough for me.

00-00 steel wool is used by woodworkers for finish sanding. Sanding means = removing material.
